Four Men in Havana

Four Men - Havana - 2013

After reading about Saul Leiter’s death early this week, I started scanning back through some of my images looking for some vivid color shots with either scarcity of stuff or an abundance of stuff in the image.

I came across this one – shot in Havana in late January. That’s my friend Doug Kaye out of focus in the lower right looking at this scene. The title comes from the four men I see in the image – maybe you can find even more! What’s fun to me about this image is how my eye just keeps exploring around the scene – it’s so chock full of interesting stuff, color, and texture.

Shot with a Nikon D600 and the 85mm Nikkor prime lens. Post-processed in Lightroom 5 with VSCO Film and in Photoshop CC.

That Beetle at Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay

Beetle - Princeton Harbor - 2013

A few weeks back, Doug Kaye and I met up for lunch at Pasta Moon in Half Moon Bay and then headed our for some early afternoon photography along the Pacific coast.

One of the places we stopped was the Pillar Point Harbor area of Half Moon Bay – the home of a large fishing fleet that plies the Pacific for great seafood. I had my Fujifilm X100S rangefinder camera in hand as we walked out on the pier. We took lots of shots of the fishing boats – but this Volkswagen caught my eye – such a top notch example of that car line!

This image was post-processed in Lightroom 5 – cropped and then treated to a bit of VSCO Film emulation to enhance the color.

The Old Pier at Pillar Point Harbor

The Old Pier - Princeton Harbor - 2013

Yesterday, Doug Kaye and I met for lunch at Pasta Moon in Half Moon Bay (a wonderful spot – highly recommended!) and then headed north up Highway 1 to explore some of our favorite spots along the Pacific coast.

We first headed to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve at Moss Beach – where an amazing grove of trees creates a tunnel that continues to delight.

Next we headed back south down Airport Road to the Princeton harbor area. One of the views from that end of the harbor looks out on this old pier jutting out into the bay. I shot this image with my Fujifilm X100S while standing on the beach. I converted it to monochrome using VSCO Film 04’s Agfa Scala 200 and then applied a touch of Topaz Simplify 4 to smooth out the water and sand just a bit – something I often find helps these kinds of water shots.

All Aglow at Pigeon Point Light

All A Glow - Pigeon Point Lighthouse - 2012

In mid-January 2012, my friend Doug Kaye and I were shooting on the San Mateo County coast. We started at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, then headed to Half Moon Bay’s Princeton Harbor and, finally, down the coast a bit further to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse.

The light on this early afternoon was quite special – as light in January can be – coming in from a low angle. This particular shot is an abstract closeup of one of the windows in the lighthouse – showing the beautiful gradient of light around the circumference and the gorgeous blue sky behind.

Shot with my Canon 5D Mark II and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens – handheld. Post-processed tonight using Lightroom 5 and VSCO Film.

Oranges

Oranges

I seem to love orange – and oranges.

When I was much younger, I consumed orange juice by the quart – undoubtedly bad for my blood sugar! I also used to love winter in California when the navel oranges came into season and we could buy big bags of them at the local supermarket. They peeled so easily and tasted so great – that sweet and tart combination with that wonderful aroma of orange zest. At my age, I now need to avoid them – unfortunately. Life gives – and life takes away!

Tonight we had a quick dinner at one of our favorite spots – and they had these oranges in a bowl near where we sat at the bar. Partially peeled for orange zest, they look a bit like zebras!

Shot with my iPhone 5s and adjusted using VSCOcam. A bit of blue shadows added and a bit of highlight relief. No need to add orange highlights to this image!

Hope you enjoy!

Line ’em Up – San Francisco Victorians

Line 'Em Up - San Francisco - 2013

The area of lower Pacific Heights in San Francisco has these wonderful splotches of old Victorian homes.

This is one example – shot with my Fujifilm X100S during a recent visit to the neighborhood with Doug Kaye.

Post-processed in Lightroom 5 with VSCO Film.

Another image from a recent visit to lower Pacific Heights in San Francisco with Doug Kaye.

This lovely staircase corner – and that window – just captured my eye!

Along the Waterfront and the Picture Postcard Workflow

Hercules and Eureka - San Francisco - 2013

In late August, Doug Kaye, Chris Chabot and I visited the San Francisco National Maritime Museum – it was one of my first times out with a new Fujifilm X100S. This image – shot at f/10, 1/800, ISO 200 – shows the great capture capability of the X100S – Tug Hercules and the ferry boat Eureka. This image was post-processed using VSCO Film 04 and Lightroom 5.

After considering this version of the image, I knew we could do better. There’s a distinct blue cast to it – which you can see in the white paint on the Eureka.

The Picture Postcard Workflow taught by Dan Margulis teaches us that the first thing we must do to every image is to adjust the color. So, I bought this version into Photoshop CC and went through the adjustment process using RGB curves. That took care of the blue cast nicely.

I then used Shadows/Highlights to bring out more detail in the shadows near the bow of the Hercules and then used the Man from Mars/Color Boost technique to add more color separation. A final sharpening step using the Sharpen 2013 action with reduced opacity results in this version of the image – much nicer I believe!

Abstracts on the Shelf

Abstract

These are some iPhone 5 shots taken in the lounge of a hotel I recently visited. I had been reading in the lounge one evening and, while heading out, noticed these interesting pieces in cabinets well lit by halogen spots above them. I played with a couple of them in VSCOcam – but most are straight out of the iPhone 5 camera.

“The best camera is the one you have with you…”
