The Redhead

Redhead - San Francisco - 2014

While walking up one of our favorite blocks on Kearny Street in San Francisco, I happened to notice this woman in a beautifully lit alley off to my left. She was eating an apple – and casting a lovely image against that stage of a background.

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E2 and post-processed in Lightroom with VSCO Film 04 (Velvia 50).

An earlier image from this series follows. I love the stars and moons in her shoes!

Misty Morning at Pigeon Point Lighthouse

Misty Saturday - Pigeon Point Lighthouse - 2014

This morning I headed over to Half Moon Bay and then south on Highway 1 to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse. I was thinking I’d capture some of the fields of yellow that bloom in the springtime along the coast – but none of them motivated me to shoot! So I kept heading to the lighthouse – it’s always interesting and the weather can be hard to predict.

When I came up on it, it was swirling around in between the fog and the blue skies above – a very interesting subject to photography. The image above is one of the first. I’ve included a couple of others below. These images were shot with my Fujifilm X-E2 and Fujifilm X100S – and processed using VSCO Film in Lightroom.

A beautiful morning along the coast!

The Garden Path at Filoli

Garden Path - Filoli - 2014

A couple weeks back I headed to Filoli for my first visit this year – with my trusty Fujifilm X-E2 in hand. I’d decided to shoot the whole time with just the 14mm Fujinon prime lens – a beautiful wide angle lens.

Here are two versions of the same image from the X-E2. The top version has been processed in Lightroom with VSCO Film 05 which adds a film like quality to the overall image.

The version below is that same processed image but after a pass through Photoshop CC and a touch of the Oil Paint filter applied. I like both versions a lot – but find the visual interest added by the oil paint filter keeps my eye more engaged looking at the painterly version!

Boots on Stage

Boots - San Francisco - 2014

I’ve written before how one of the fun parts of street photography is to find an interesting background and then wait for something interesting to appear within it.

This is a shot like that – taken along San Francisco’s Kearny Street – when there’s no parking and the shops along the street provide a wonderful backdrop – a perfect stage. Gotta love those boots!

This image was shot with my Fujifilm X-E2 and post processed using Lightroom and VSCO Film 05.

A Celebration of Life in The Cathedral of Christ the Light

The Cathedral of Christ the Light - Oakland - 2014

Even though I’ve lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for a long time, I’d not heard of this cathedral in Oakland. Last week, my friend Doug Kaye forwarded me an email – a group of his friends from the Marin Photo Club were heading over to shoot in this cathedral on Saturday and would I like to join?

Shooting a venue with a group of photographers can be a lot of fun – and a great learning experience – so I said “Sure! I’m in.” Somehow I’d completely missed the construction of this beautiful cathedral. A check of images from others helped educate me to its striking architecture. Pretty amazing work!

When we arrived on Saturday, a memorial service was underway in the sanctuary – celebrating the life of Dr. Frank Staggers. We headed downstairs to the mausoleum area and photographed there. I drifted back upstairs and listened to the last twenty minutes of the Staggers’ memorial. Such a celebration of a wonderful life!

I shared this with a friend: “A random encounter with the memories of a such great man!” – she replied: “I like the serendipity of being in the right place at the right time.”

Indeed. It was a beautiful Saturday in so many ways. Go when you can!

Self-Portrait at San Francisco’s Exploratorium

Self Portrait - San Francisco - 2014

Sometimes reflections hold the key to great images. Here’s a recent example from New Year’s Day – shot outside of San Francisco’s Exploratorium – and it’s glass wall. I really love this image!

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E2. Post-processed in Lightroom 5 and VSCO Film.

The Willie L. Brown, Jr. Bridge

The Willie L. Brown, Jr. Bridge - San Francisco - 2014

On Friday, Doug Kaye and I were on our way to an appointment to visit Pier 24. If you’ve not been to Pier 24, you HAVE to go. A beautiful experience.

I shot this with my iPhone 5s as we walked along the Embarcadero. Pier 24 is jutting into the image from the right. The pigeon caught my eye!

Converted to monochrome in Lightroom 5 using VSCO Film.

One of my local favorites: Cafe Borrone in Menlo Park

Cafe Borrone - Menlo Park - 2014

One of my favorite local spots in Menlo Park is Cafe Borrone. I’m often there early for breakfast and sometimes, with colleagues, for lunch. Great food, great location, beautiful light, art, music. It’s a delight.

Today I headed over to Cafe Borrone for an early lunch – actually breakfast – and, as I was leaving, captured this image of the plaza with my iPhone 5s.

On my way around the corner, I noticed that the new area soon to become Borrone Marketbar was beginning to be revealed – and I snapped this shot below. Looking forward to the launch of the Marketbar! You can read more about the Marketbar here.

In the Field along Tomales Bay in August

In the Field - Tomales Bay - 2010

In August 2010, I took a workshop focus on Tomales Bay and Point Reyes. One of the other participants – Jack – was shooting with a set of classic cameras. It was a joy to watch him work.

Here’s a shot of Jack taken early on a late August morning along Tomales Bay. He’s shooting the famous Point Reyes fishing boat – aground at Inverness. The morning sun is on his back. I can smell the scene.

Shot with my Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS lens. Post-processed using Lightroom 5, VSCO Film and Photoshop CC with Topaz Simplify 4.

Car 28 on Powell Street

Car 28 - San Francisco - 2012

In April 2012 Doug Kaye and I met at the San Francisco Powell Street BART station. Because of the weather, we thought we might spend our time that day on the trains and in the stations – but when we got to Powell Street we could see daylight so we met in the station and headed upstairs.

This image was captured with my tiny Canon PowerShot S100. I was always drawn to this image because of the street advertising on the left side – seemed pretty cool!

The image was post-processed in Lightroom 5 using VSCO Film 04 and then into Photoshop CC where a radial blur filter helped add a sense of motion to the cable car coming down the tracks.
