Old and New – Columbus and Montgomery in San Francisco

North Beach Hotel - San Francisco - 2009

This is an image that’s been shot many, many times in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood.

On this Saturday morning in August 2009 we had some special light and I captured this image with my Canon 5D Mark II.

Post-processed in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC with a touch of the Oil Paint filter to add a bit of texture.

That Postcard Shot – San Francisco Skyline from Berkeley Marina

Morning Glory - San Francisco - 2013

Last August, Doug Kaye and I met up at the Berkeley Marina for one of our photo walks. I didn’t think it was such a great venue at the time – but, now, in December, looking back at some of these images, I think we had a good couple of hours there!

This is a shot from the shoreline of the marina looking at San Francisco – with the sailboat, some interesting hues and colors, and a layer of trees in the lower left foreground.

Shot with my Nikon D600 – post-processed in Lightroom 5.

Ah Berkeley!

Ah Berkeley! - Berkeley - 2013

We’ve got a lot of Berkeley in our family! I went to Cal in the late 60’s during the protest movements featured in this sculpture by Scott Donahue on the east end of the Pedestrian-Bike bridge that spans Interstate 80 in Berkeley. Ah, memories…

Shot with my Nikon D600. Post-processed in Lightroom 5, Photoshop CC, and Nik Analog Camera.

Bookends – The Color Version

Bookends #2 - New York City - 2010

I’ve got two photos of mine hanging in my home office. One is a wide image shot at Sparks Lake near Bend, Oregon this summer. The other is a monochrome version of this “Bookends” image. Both are Sizzlpix images – and they’re magnificent. No frames, they just stand out from the wall as if they’re floating there. Beautiful.

I’ve been wanting to go back to “Bookends” for a while – to try a color version. The monochrome is very powerful – but there are some beautiful colors in the original shot taken with my Canon PowerShop S90 (since sold!).

This version was re-edited in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC. A subtle use of Topaz Simplify 4 was applied before using the Camera Raw filter to make some final tweaks. A bit of sharpening and a vignette applied back in Lightroom finished it off.

Brings back such great memories of our visit to New York!…

Down the Line at China Camp

Down the Line - China Camp - 2013

I’d heard of China Camp – but never been there. It’s a great spot – on the bay side of San Rafael in Marin County – with some wonderful places to shoot.

This is an image I shot with my iPhone 5. Post=processed using Lightroom 5 with VSCO Film 04 and then Oil Paint filter in Photoshop CC. I love how the painterly effects play with the water and sky in this image.

That Photographer Working at Point Reyes

At Work - Point Reyes - 2013

Here’s another shot from a great day on Point Reyes with Doug Kaye back in January.

The photographer had the high ground up on the rock – and he looked at us suggesting that it was his turf!

Shot with my Nikon D600 and post-processed in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC. A bit of platinum toning adds to the depth and color – of this monochrome image. A personal favorite of mine – this one is getting printed and hung on the wall!

55 - New York - 2013

55 – I think it’s 55 East 65th Street in New York City! Just across from the amazing Daniel.

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E2, post-processed in Lightroom 5 with VSCO Film and Photoshop CC.

That Brownstone on E 65th Street

Brownstone on E 65th Street - New York - 2013

As we were walking to dinner, I came across this shot – that amazing window with the light behind, the fall color in the trees and a walker.

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E2. Post-processed in Lightroom 5 and VSCO Film 04.

Such a Drag

Such a Drag - New York - 2013

Sometimes you see amazing things when you’re walking with a camera in your hand.

On this Friday morning, I was walking over to the Pierre Hotel to participate in a panel discussion at a bankers’ conference. As I walked up Fifth Avenue, I came across this shot. Sneaking a drag in such a beautiful spot. I suspect they’re oblivious to the big issues of banking we were about to discuss. In the moment.

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E2 with the 14mm Fujinon lens. Post-processed in Lightroom 5 with VSCO Film 04.

Hailing a Taxi on New York City’s Madison Avenue – Fujifilm X-E2

Taxi Hailer on Madison Avenue - New York - 2013

Here’s another shot from our pre-Thanksgiving visit to New York City. We were walking up Madison Avenue to dinner. Something friends have always told me – be sure to turn around and look back – came into my head. I did – and here’s what I saw. Love the scope of this image – from the guy on the left with the garbage can to the taxi hailer and then on to the FedEx truck on the right.

Shot handheld with the amazing Fujifilm X-E2 and post-processed in Lightroom 5 with VSCO Film 04. Adjusted a bit further in Photoshop CC using Topaz Simplify 4 to reduce detail on the buildings in the distance to keep the eye down at street level. Click on the image to see a larger size version.

Ah, New York City in the fall…
