A Super Selfie from San Francisco’s Exploratorium

Super Selfie - San Francisco - 2014

My photo buddy Doug Kaye and I recently visited San Francisco’s Exploratorium in their new location at Pier 15 along San Francisco’s Embarcadero.

Among the many hands-on exhibits inside, there are a couple fascinating mirror-based exhibits – including the one I used for this photo.

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E2, and processed in Lightroom 5, this image was a lot of fun to shoot.

The Irish Bank: Street Photography in San Francisco

The Irish Bank - San Francisco - 2014

I’m enjoying the oil paint filter in Photoshop CC – especially when used on images like this with the brickwork and texture. I enjoy how it can add a touch of additional texture to an image.

There are some wonderful alleys in San Francisco – some filled with cafes like The Irish Bank. They’re worth exploring further. I keep telling Doug Kaye that we need to write the book: “The Stages of San Francisco”. The second in that series should be “The Alleys of San Francisco”. Great places for street photography is a great city.

This image was shot with my Fujifilm X-E2 and post-processed in Lightroom 5 with VSCO Film before tweaking with the oil paint filter in Photoshop CC.

Riding the Powell and Hyde Street Cable Car: Street Photography in San Francisco

Easy Riders - San Francisco - 2014

Here’s another image from our recent street photography photo walk in San Francisco. After meeting at the Ferry Building, we caught a quick Uber ride up to San Francisco’s Union Square. Lots of people and activity.

As we started out, the Powell and Hyde Street cable cars began moving quite frequently up and down Powell St. We had some interesting mid-morning January light and tried to find a spot that might work out sort of as a stage.

This is one of my shots – taken with my Fujifilm X-E2 and post-processed in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC.

Sunshine at Princeton Harbor in Half Moon Bay

Sunshine - Princeton Harbor - 2013

This is one of those images that just pops for me. Doug Kaye and I were out exploring Half Moon Bay and environs. Along the way we walked out on the pier at Princeton Harbor – as the sun was beaming down on these fishing boats.

This was shot with my Fujifilm X100S – a superb camera – and tweaked in Lightroom 5, VSCO Film, and Photoshop CC.

Self-Portrait at San Francisco’s Exploratorium

Self Portrait - San Francisco - 2014

Sometimes reflections hold the key to great images. Here’s a recent example from New Year’s Day – shot outside of San Francisco’s Exploratorium – and it’s glass wall. I really love this image!

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E2. Post-processed in Lightroom 5 and VSCO Film.

The Willie L. Brown, Jr. Bridge

The Willie L. Brown, Jr. Bridge - San Francisco - 2014

On Friday, Doug Kaye and I were on our way to an appointment to visit Pier 24. If you’ve not been to Pier 24, you HAVE to go. A beautiful experience.

I shot this with my iPhone 5s as we walked along the Embarcadero. Pier 24 is jutting into the image from the right. The pigeon caught my eye!

Converted to monochrome in Lightroom 5 using VSCO Film.

In the Field along Tomales Bay in August

In the Field - Tomales Bay - 2010

In August 2010, I took a workshop focus on Tomales Bay and Point Reyes. One of the other participants – Jack – was shooting with a set of classic cameras. It was a joy to watch him work.

Here’s a shot of Jack taken early on a late August morning along Tomales Bay. He’s shooting the famous Point Reyes fishing boat – aground at Inverness. The morning sun is on his back. I can smell the scene.

Shot with my Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS lens. Post-processed using Lightroom 5, VSCO Film and Photoshop CC with Topaz Simplify 4.

New Year’s Day 2014

Blue Note - San Francisco - 2014

For the last several years, I’ve headed north to San Francisco on New Year’s Day for some photography. Often, at this time of year, we’ve interesting weather and skies – making for some great opportunities along the coast and at the Golden Gate Bridge.

This year, we weren’t blessed with any of that kind of weather – just another day in paradise with clear blue skies and temperatures approach 70 degrees. I’ve been fighting a nasty cold for the last week or so – and was dying to get outside to do some shooting. Doug Kaye and I decided we’d head for our favorite spot – meeting up around the Ferry Building and heading out from there.

While we’ve shot many times around the Ferry Building, Embarcadero Center, etc. we had not headed north on the Embarcadero and had missed the venues for some great photography along that side.

Over the holiday season, I’d received a card from a friend that had a perspective I’d never seen – turns out it was shot from Pier 7 – a venue we’d never explored. So this morning we did. You can find the set of my images from today here on Flickr.

This particular image is one that I really enjoy. At the new Exploratorium location at Piers 15-17 there’s Fog Bridge – a work by Fujiko Nakaya. It fires off every 30 minutes and Doug and I waited to see it in action. I shot the image above with my Fujifilm X-E2 and post-processed it in Lightroom 5. I call it “Blue Note“.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to explore the inside of the new Exploratorium today – but it’s on our list for future visit!

Happy New Year 2014!

Coastal Light - Pigeon Point - 2012

Today is my father’s birthday – he was born December 31, 1921 and would have been 92 years old today.

His father, my grandfather, was born on December 24, 1879.

Two Carl’s – one born on Christmas Eve, the other on New Year’s Eve. On this New Year’s Eve, I remember them both. Wonderful fathers indeed.

Happy New Year! Best wishes for a great 2014!
