Birmingham Electric along San Francisco’s Market Street

Birmingham Electric - San Francisco - 2014

On a drizzly Friday in San Francisco, we walked along Market Street heading back to the Ferry Building. It’s fun to get wet pavements – and, sometimes, even reflections – as they’re not all that common in the City.

This is an image of one of the historic streetcars that run on San Francisco’s Market Street – in the livery of the Birmingham Railway and Electric Company in Birmingham, Alabama. The car itself has a subtle sense of motion to it – and the fact that it’s only a partial shot seems to add a touch of drama to the image.

Shot with my Fujifilm X100S. Post-processed in Lightroom 5 and VSCO Film.

Channeling Fan Ho along San Francisco’s Embarcadero

Belle - San Francisco - 2014

A while back while watching one of Kelby’s videos with Jay Maisel, Jay mentioned some other photographers whose work he enjoys. One of them was Fan Ho – who Jay thought was copying his work until he learned that Fan was older than him!

We recently visited an exhibition of Vivian Maier’s photography at a gallery on Geary Street in San Francisco – and down the hall was the Modernbook Gallery which has published a couple of books of Fan Ho’s work and had several examples hanging in their gallery. One thing that pops out when you look at his work is how often his images are shot into the light – and, as a result, have striking contrast between the bright and dark tones in the image.

This is a cheap example of a Fan Ho style shot – along San Francisco’s Embarcadero. Shot with my iPhone 5s and post-processed in Lightroom 5.

Morning Glow inside San Francisco’s Ferry Building

Blue Bottle - San Francisco - 2014

This is a shot inside San Francisco’s Ferry Building on a beautiful morning. The windows up top in the building provide beautiful indirect light into the market areas. This image was shot outside the Blue Bottle Coffee shop with my Fujifilm X-E2 and post-processed in Lightroom 5, Photoshop CC and Nik’s Color Efex Pro 4.

On the Streets of San Francisco

Hats - San Francisco - 2014

Sometimes I just see interesting light on an interesting subject. This is an example – walking along the street in San Francisco’s Financial District in interesting light and enjoying the two hats.

Captured with my Fujifilm X-E2 and post-processed in Lightroom 5 and VSCO Film.

A Bit of Solitude at Stanford Memorial Church

Solitude - Stanford - 2014

I recently took a Sunday walk on the Stanford campus – something that was an almost weekly occurrence when Lily was alive. We always had a great time – she made lots of new friends and found lots of interesting smells along the way. And I got some nice exercise – which I’ve been missing!

On this Sunday morning, I had my Fujifilm X100S with me. Here’s one of the images – taken in the small area behind the Stanford Memorial Church. A great spot for peace and quiet – and for reading.

I post-processed this in Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC – applying a bit of a painterly effect.

Checking In – Back to the Farmers’ Market in Havana, Cuba

Checking In - Havana - 2013

From time to time, I look back at some of my older images – and my images from our amazing visit to Havana in early 2013 are now in that older category!

This is an image I hadn’t processed before – that struck me as I was browsing through my Cuba images in Lightroom.

We were in a large warehouse with a farmers’ market underway. Lots of nooks and crannies. As we walked around, we mostly had friendly encounters – with one except that I’ll always remember! This is a shot that I took looking out from within the warehouse – just loved the feel of the characters.

Shot with my Nikon D600 and post-processed in Lightroom 5 and VSCO Film.

Simplicity along San Francisco’s Kearny Street

Lunch - Kearny Street - 2014

San Francisco’s Kearny Street is one of our favorite photographic stages – there are a couple of whole blocks that have no parking on the eastern side of the street – the side which is also well lit during the day. You can stand on the other side of the street and just wait for interesting things to happen.

Here’s one from a recent visit with my friend Doug Kaye. I enjoyed the shapes in this image: squares, rectangles, triangles – and cones! The simplicity is the shot.

Shot with my Fujifilm X-T1 and the 55-200mm zoom, I post processed it in Lightroom 5 using VSCO Film.

Another View of the Olive Grove at Filoli

In the Grove #2 - Filoli - 2014

A few days ago I published another version of this image shot at Filoli with my Fujifilm X-T1. It was somewhat unsatisfying to me – not sure why but it just was.

After asking my friend Doug Kaye for his thoughts, I worked on it again in both Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC – working to remove a couple of branches in the middle that I thought distracted from the “tunnel effect” of the composition. I also, learning from Doug’s feedback, used some dodging and burning to adjust the contrast selectively in various areas of the image – trying to improve the sense of dimensionality.

I think this one is better – but I’ve decided to set it aside for now and will likely come back to it again with another try!

The Light at Point Montara

The Light - Point Montara - 2012

Here’s an image shot a couple of years ago at Point Montara along the Pacific coast. This is one of my favorite spots close to home – and I shot this image using my old favorite Canon 5D Mark II with the 70-200mm f/2.8L lens.

I processed it in Lightroom 5 and added a touch of Glamour Glow using Nik’s Color Efex Pro 4 to soften the skies and water just a touch.
