The San Giovanni

San Giovanni - Pillar Point Harbor - 2013

As Doug Kaye and I were walking out on the pier at Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay, I was drawn to the combination of the angle of the sunlight on the bow of these two fishing boats along with the yellow color of the closest boat (the “Sunshine”). I shot the image with my Fujifilm X100S.

In this version of the image, I’ve exaggerated both the color and the glow – through application of a cinematic toning in Lightroom. The highlights have a bit more orange in them than normal while the shadows have a bit more blue. The combination gives a film-style cinematic effect.

I then brought the image into Photoshop CC and added an Oil Paint layer at about 50% opacity to add some additional texture/shadows into the image. Finally, a 50 pixel black frame around the image to keep your eyes inside.

The Old Pier at Pillar Point Harbor

The Old Pier - Princeton Harbor - 2013

Yesterday, Doug Kaye and I met for lunch at Pasta Moon in Half Moon Bay (a wonderful spot – highly recommended!) and then headed north up Highway 1 to explore some of our favorite spots along the Pacific coast.

We first headed to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve at Moss Beach – where an amazing grove of trees creates a tunnel that continues to delight.

Next we headed back south down Airport Road to the Princeton harbor area. One of the views from that end of the harbor looks out on this old pier jutting out into the bay. I shot this image with my Fujifilm X100S while standing on the beach. I converted it to monochrome using VSCO Film 04’s Agfa Scala 200 and then applied a touch of Topaz Simplify 4 to smooth out the water and sand just a bit – something I often find helps these kinds of water shots.

Halloween Princess

Menlo Park Halloween Parade - 2013

Saturday I took my Fujifilm X100S to capture some images from the annual Menlo Park Halloween Parade – a great annual event for kids and their parents to just have fun parading up Menlo Park’s Santa Cruz Avenue.

Lots of fun – see my full set over at InMenlo.com – but this one captured my heart. Before the parade started, I was hanging around the front of the parade route when this little princess came down the sidewalk. I asked her if I could take her picture and she lit up, looking right at me and my camera. The Fujifilm X100S is perfect for this kind of street capture!

Life is a series of these wonderful moments – and Saturday was special indeed!

Look Through My Window

Look Through My Window - San Francisco - 2013

Another image from a recent visit to lower Pacific Heights in San Francisco with Doug Kaye.

This lovely staircase corner – and that window – just captured my eye!

Shot with my Fujifilm X100S – post processed using VSCO Film in Lightroom 5.

The Blades in Japantown

Blades - San Francisco - 2013

San Francisco’s Japantown has a couple of Oragami sculptures in the center courtyard area.

Here’s a shot from my Fujifilm X100S of one of those sculptures. The lights and shadows played across these “blades” making for an delightful abstract composition.

The Doorways of San Francisco

Three Up - San Francisco - 2013

Doug Kaye and I recently took a walk in the lower Pacific Heights area of San Francisco. Along the way, I started getting fascinated by the doorways – in particular those of some of the Victorians in this neighborhood. (At this point, I’m trying to resist the urge for Doorways of San Francisco to turn into another personal project!)

This is a quick shot over a fence of three doors in one of those Victorians. I loved the symmetry of these doors – all lined up. Notice that the two doors on the left open one way and the one on the right opens the other way. Fun!

Shot with my Fujifilm X100S, quickly tweaked to monochrome in Lightroom using VSCO Film 04 Agfa Scala 200.

Only the Lonely – Painterly Versions

Yesterday I posted a re-edited image shot taken on the Ferryboat Eureka at the San Francisco National Maritime Historic Park in late August with my Fujifilm X100S.

One of my friends commented that he thought the image was “Hopperesque” – referring to the painting style of American artist Edward Hopper.

His comment made me want to try two alternative treatments of this same image – one adjusted in Photoshop CC using Topaz Simplify 4’s Buzsim filter. The second adjusted in Photoshop CC using the Oil Paint filter. You can see both treatments below – frankly, I like both of them better than the original! Both versions are below – click on the image to go to Flickr and see a larger version.

Here’s the Topaz Simplify 4 version:

Here’s the Photoshop CC Oil Paint version:

Only the Lonely #2 – Ferryboat Eureka – San Francisco

Only the Lonely #2 - San Francisco - 2013

There’s something peaceful about this image that I really like. It was shot onboard the Ferryboat Eureka at the San Francisco National Maritime Historic Park in late August with my Fujifilm X100S.

In Lightroom 5, I gave this image the “full cinematic” treatment in terms of split color toning – highlights going towards orange and shadows toward teal/blue. The red is just perfect!

The only thing missing are the actors – waiting off on stage right!… A good friend comments on Facebook: “Hopperesque“.

Saturday at the Ranch

At the Pond - SMIP Ranch - 2013

Earlier this year we began getting a weekly delivery of fresh farm produce from a local grower in the hills west of Woodside. It’s been a delight to have this fresh produce each week!

This weekend, we took a short drive over to see the farm and to meet the couple that cultivates this wonderful farm.

I took my Fujifilm X100S along – along with my new iPhone 5s – and snapped a few pictures while we were there. The image above is from the X100S – it’s a shot of the pond that is spring fed and used for the irrigation of the five acre farm. A beautiful spot on a Saturday morning!

The two shots below are different interpretations of an image I shot with my iPhone 5s just to the right of the earlier image. The images were edited using iPhone applications in the phone and then uploaded to Flickr. I like both of them – but the second one – with the more antique look and toning – is my preference.

All of these images are very peaceful to me. They delight in a most subtle but satisfying way. Hope you like them too!

Skater in Old Town – San Diego

Skater - San Diego - 2013

Doug Kaye and I got to San Diego thinking we might have some opportunities to shoot while we attended Dan Margulis’ workshop. As it turned out, Dan is quite a taskmaster – in a very good way – and we only had our first evening to head out for shooting.

We headed first to Old Town – and I caught this skater as he zoomed past while we were sitting on a bench.
