Young and Old – Half Dome in Yosemite

Young and Old

I’ve posted an all black and white version of this image before – “The Real Yosemite” – taken in Cook’s Meadow looking at Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. It’s one of my favorites – with big Half Dome in the distance and the young family playing in the snow in the meadow below.

Lately, I’ve been re-learning some tools and techniques for post-processing images and decided to take another try at a slightly different approach to this particular image – you see the result above. This has a very minimalist use of selective color – on the child’s jacket – along with some subtle toning that, for me, adds a bit more depth to the image versus my earlier black and white treatment – included below.

Which version do you prefer?

North Beach Photowalking with Chris Honeysett

iew from Washington Square by Scott Loftesness

As I was getting back into photography a few years ago, I became interested in the work of Chris Honeysett. His work in black and white around both San Francisco and other environs really caught my eye. I’m not sure how I first came across his work – probably at one of the local arts shows here on the Peninsula. Along the way, I picked up two of his framed prints – one for my office and another for my home office. They’re both beautiful and remind me every day of the beauty of northern California.

In August 2009, I decided to take my first ever photo workshop with Chris in the North Beach area of San Francisco. Turns out it was his first workshop too. Our small group met at his studio and – painfully for me – we went through a portfolio review as a group, sharing some of our work, hearing Chris’ critique, and trying to absorb. Oh my.

We then headed to the subject area of our workshop – North Beach in San Francisco. I’ll never forget what happened. We parked alongside Washington Square Park and Chris said something like “Go find some shots!” All of us, with our DSLRs in hand, immediately began firing away – at the front of the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, up at Coit Tower, and people in the park – you name it, we were blasting away.

After a minute or two of this, Chris yelled “Stop!” He pulled us back together and suggested (!) that perhaps we might want to spend a bit more time thinking about the setting and composing potential shots. Slow down. Stop shooting. Start looking. Slow down.

His words still echo in my ears whenever I get into a venue. Stop. Slow down. Take a deep look around. And look some more. Before you start shooting. For me, it flips my brain over to the right side and I begin to see differently. Powerful stuff. Trey Ratcliff says that music also helps. I think it does – a pair of headphones on a photo shoot can work wonders at enabling me to just focus and see.

This image is one that Chris taught us to see. He took us to this spot and asked us to visualize our shot. We all were compelled to go vertical – into portrait – to capture the front of the church. Of course, if we’d done so, we would have missed the beauty of both the church and Coit Tower – and the matching fluting of both. I’ve tweaked a bit. Mostly bringing down the color so that it’s just there and enhancing the lights and shadows of those beautiful buildings.

I’ll always remember Chris for his impact on me and teaching me to slow down – and look. After all, it’s really all about learning to see.

Note: Chris Honeysett will be participating in this weekend’s Palo Alto Festival of the Arts.

Gene Soucy and Friend over Salinas

Gene Soucy and Friend by Scott Loftesnes

Among my many weaknesses are air shows. Since I’ve gotten back into photography, I find them even more fun – the sound and the sights just excite me!

This photo was taken at the California International Airshow in Salinas in 2009. I had the big lens (with tele-extender) deployed on my Canon 5D Mark II and caught this great shot of Gene Soucy and his wing walker zooming by the crowd. I just love the colors and attitude in this image – in my mind it’s a classic air show photograph! Hope you enjoy it!

The Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse in Santa Cruz

Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse

The Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse in Santa Cruz is a memorial built by Abbott’s family following his death in a surfing accident in 1965. It’s a beautiful lighthouse and sits up high above the Santa Cruz surfing channel. Reading a bit of the history about this lighthouse, it turns out that Esther and Chuck Abbott, Mark’s parents and builders of this memorial, also were photographers.

This image was originally shot in RAW using my Canon 5D Mark II with the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens on March 29, 2009, a beautifully clear bright sunny day. It was post-processed using Photoshop with Nik’s Color Efex 2 and Silver Efex 2. I loved the light angle on the lighthouse – and decided to use a red filter in post-processing to darken the sky and make the lighthouse “pop”. Hope you like it!

The Crosses at Mission San Juan Bautista

Crosses

Just out back of Mission San Juan Bautista is a small, private cemetery with a locked gate. In the cemetery, there are about twenty crosses spread across the hillside – but apparently they mark many, many more graves. The San Andreas fault runs along the base of the hill just below this cemetery as does the original path of El Camino Real.

This image was taken over the locked gate – using my Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens. The image was first processed as a single image HDR using Photomatix Pro and then converted to black and white with Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2. A subtle color tone was added to slightly warm the image.

The Arches in the Stanford Quad

The Arches in the Stanford Quad by Scott Loftesness

A couple of weeks ago, I was out walking around Stanford and came across this scene just off the inner Quad. This image was shot as a single image HDR with my Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens. For this shot, ISO was 100, shutter speed was 1/320 with the lens at f/4.6 at 130 mm. The image was post-processed using Photomatix Pro and tweaked slightly in Photoshop CS5.

Hope you enjoy!

A Special Time for Green Tea

Green Tea Pot by Scott Loftesness

Do you like green tea? It’s healthy and soothing stuff. Fun to smell, holding the cup in your hand, and then slowing down and appreciating the moment. Healthy and soothing. A first sip…

This image of a green tea pot comes from this year’s Maker Faire SF. It evokes that green tea feeling! Shot with my Canon 5D Mark II, cropped to a 16:9 ratio and then tweaked in Photoshop using a few Nik filters with the use of selective coloring to just bring out the beautiful color of the green tea pot.

Hope you enjoy! And slow down while you do!…

Youthful Exuberance in the Stanford Quad!

Youthful Exhuberance in the Stanford Quad

A few weeks ago on Sunday, July 31, I walked a bit of the Stanford campus with my Canon 5D Mark II in tow – shooting this time with the long Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens. Turns out I had just picked up a new camera strap – BlackRapid – and wanted to try it out while walking the campus.

While walking around the Stanford Quad, I came across this scene of a young man and his Mom heading out toward the Oval. He was just bursting with energy – almost dancing along as he walked while Mom tried to just stare off into the distance. In ten years, I suspect he’ll be a student at Stanford!

In post-processing this image, I decided on a tighter crop than originally shot along with a black and white conversion using Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2. I added a layer mask and brought back in the kid’s colorful hat, hat band, shirt and shoes of this young man as he had fun walking.

Shortly after taking this shot, he threw his hat into the air – but, alas, I wasn’t prepared and missed what was probably the best shot! But this one comes close for me!

My Mid-2011 Photography Workflow

Self Portrait in a Moving Mirror

My photography workflow has evolved significantly over the last couple of years – “evolved” being perhaps a euphemism for “gotten more complicated”! I’ve been influenced by paying attention to the workflow of others – picking up tips especially from watching Trey Ratcliff and others as they’ve shared their approaches. I’ve wanted to write this down for my own reference – and, now that I’ve written it up, thought it might be worth sharing as well. So, read on for my photography workflow – as it stands today.

Pepper Season 2011

Peppers - Happy Quail Farms - Menlo Park Farmers Market

Pepper season has arrived at our local Menlo Park Farmers Market – and they look great!

Our favorite pepper from local grower Happy Quail Farms isn’t actually shown in the image – be sure to try the Pimientos de Padrón, a specialty of the farm and a great accompaniment to almost any grilled meat dish! Many Bay Area chefs say the best locally-produced sweet and hot peppers come from this small East Palo Alto Farm.

This photo was shot as a RAW with my Canon 5D Mark II using the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L lens from about 10 feet away. Photomatix Pro was just for post-processing with some final tweaks being done using Lightroom 3.
