Into the Light – on Leidesdorff Street in San Francisco

Into the Light - San Francisco - 2013

There’s a wonderful street – more like an alley for pedestrians (no cars) – in San Francisco that just lights up this time of year with reflected light shining off of the Transamerica Pyramid. It’s Leidesdorff Street – and you’ll love it!

Doug Kaye and I discovered it this week – and we almost got lost in shooting because the light was so special. The reflected light in San Francisco’s Financial District this time of year – with the low sun angle – made for many interesting venues – but I think this was perhaps the best.

This image is one example – the rider heading north on Leidesdorff Street into that reflected light from the Pyramid. Doug first noticed this spot – one of those places we call a “stage“. We love finding these places – with very special light or a most interesting background – and just move across the street and wait for something interesting to happen – such as this man riding by on his bicycle.

I shot this with my new Fujifilm X-E2 using the “kit” 18-55mm lens. I’m still learning the best settings on the X-E2 for street photography with this lens – so the rider is a bit blurrier than I’d prefer – but it’s still a great image with that wonderful light.

Morning on San Francisco’s Mission Creek

Mission Creek Morning - San Francisco - 2013

Here’s another image shot with the new Fujifilm X-E2 – this time it’s a morning scene on San Francisco’s Mission Creek – looking down toward the bridge and, beyond, AT&T Park.

The image was shot handheld with the X-E2 using the 18-55mm “kit” lens. I post-processed it using a touch of Topaz Simplify 4 and a bit of the Oil Paint filter in Photoshop CC – to both remove some details but also add back in a touch of subtle texture (click on the image to open a larger version). A final bit of cinematic toning was applied in Lightroom using the Split Toning panel.

San Francisco’s Magnificent Seven

Magnificent Seven - San Francisco - 2013

While exploring San Francisco’s Financial District with Doug Kaye, we came across this group of seven guys eating lunch on the steps of Bentley Reserve building on Battery Street. This is one of those lovely old classic bank buildings with columns and all.

I saw these guys as we were about to cross Sacramento Street – and captured this shot. The light was wonderful and they were having fun. Sometimes you get lucky – and this time I did with the look on the faces.

I decided to process this image using a simplification technique that removes details and enhances the overall structure of the image. It helps remove distracting details and often delights. This time it did.

Shot with my Fujifilm X-E2 and post-processed using Topaz Simplify 4 and Photoshop CC.

Doug captured a straight-on shot of these seven – here’s his image!

No Parking in San Francisco

DSCF0115-Edit-framed

While walking along Pine St. in San Francisco, I captured this image with my new Fujifilm X-E2 of this guy and his elongated “Texas-size” bicycle frame. He was here for a moment and then gone. Fun street photography!

Post-processed in Lightroom and Photoshop CC with a bit of an oil paint filter applied to make the textures of the light more interesting.

First Images from My Fujifilm X-E2

Sharon Park - Menlo Park - Fujifilm X-E2

Last night, my new Fujifilm X-E2 arrived and I was able to squeeze in a few minutes this afternoon on the way home to stop by one of my favorite spots – Sharon Park in Menlo Park.

This image is a JPEG straight out of the camera. I’d set the camera up with pretty much the default settings – the only change was to shoot the JPEGs with the Velvia film emulation option – which adds color to the image. I’ve posted a few more images from the X-E2 to a new Flickr set that I just started today.

So far, I’m loving how this camera feels and works. A big attraction for me was compatibility with the menu system, etc. between the X-E2 and my Fujifilm X-100S. It’s great having both of these so capable cameras in my “nimble photography” kit bag!

Next up – trying out the 14mm f/2.8 lens on the X-E2. Looking forward!…
