San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum is currently featuring a beautiful exhibition of China’s Terracotta Warriors.
Here’s an image from a recent visit – of a horse carriage driver. He’s out in the lobby – before you get into one of the three galleries with the other warriors and related sculptures.
This image was shot handheld with my Nikon D600 and post-processed in Photoshop CS6 along with Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.
This image, shot recently at San Francisco’s City Hall during a photo walk with Doug Kaye, breaks many of the “rules” of good photography.
But, rules are made to be broken, right?
And, what’s most important is to enjoy and have fun with images – and this one seems to do that. Hope you enjoy it!

I’ve been experimenting a bit more with textures – and picked this image tonight to experiment with. The base image has a couple of textures added on top – in Photoshop using Overlay and Soft Light blend modes. It’s very different from the monochromes I’ve been doing recently – but that’s why I like it!
For the first time, I attended the San Francisco Saint Patrick’s Day Parade a few weeks ago. The event is a great time – lots of wonderful street photography opportunities!
This image is of the firefighters’ section of the parade – one of the largest units. I enjoyed seeing these guys have a great time driving their old time fire engine, smoking a couple of cigars and enjoying the crowd!
The image was shot with a Nikon D600 and post-processed in Lightroom and Photoshop using Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2 plus some other tricks.
This is the second version of this image of a photographer standing on a rock above Drake’s Beach that I’ve processed. The first was in color – and this version was processed as a monochrome. In addition, a cloudy texture was added to add some drama to the skies – and a final tweak to change the blacks to warm black.
Here’s a shot from early January 2013 – at Drake’s Beach at Point Reyes. Shot with my Nikon D600, I post-processed it in Photoshop with Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2. I love the contrast in this shot – and how the kiterunner is heading into the light off to the right.

On the road from Hawi to Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii is this field with a lone tree.
While driving past, I hit the brakes and hopped out to capture this image with my Nikon D600. It’s cropped a bit on the bottom to remove a barbed wire fence.
The late March morning sky was beautiful. I opted for this version in black and white – warm black actually.
Up on the north end of the Big Island of Hawaii – near the town of Hawi – are about a dozen big windmills taking advantage of the prevailing winds sweeping through the area.
In this image, a few horses are enjoying themselves in the warm wind in a field near the windmills. Shot with a Nikon D600, the image was post-processed in Photoshop using some of Tony Kuyper’s luminosity masking techniques.
One of the things I’m always looking for when out shooting is a puddle – something that can be used to shoot reflections.
Here’s a shot based on a big puddle – a hotel swimming pool – shot shortly after sunrise. I loved how the palms were shimmering in the surface of the pool’s water.
I used Lightroom and one of Trey Ratcliff’s Lightroom presets to process the image- Infrared Morning to help create the effect. Naturally, I also flipped the image upside down so that the trees look semi-normal!
For the past few years, I’ve been heading to San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge for some photography. I’m not much of a football fan – and after the holidays it feels great to get out and walk with camera in hand!
This past New Year’s Day, I went up the Great Highway and stopped at the Cliff House. The morning light was very nice and I captured this shot looking down the beach just down the hill a bit from the Cliff House. I processed it to black and white using Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.
