I attended a private event last night at the newly redone California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The facility is truly amazing – compared to the stodgy (but still fun!) old building.
I wasn’t able to take the time to go through the Rain Forest – that’s apparently a special treat – but did get to watch the Fragile Planet show in the new version of the Morrison Planetarium – which claims to now be the largest all-digital planetarium on planet Earth.
The show was great – blasting us out of the building, zooming around its roof covered with native plants, and then off to explore distant galaxies and their suns and planets.
I asked the guides if the new planetarium was doing any of the old Laserium light shows that were so popular back in the hey deys of the late 60’s/early 70’s. They looked at me like I was from another planet – “Uh, no, they don’t do those kinds of shows here anymore…” Oh, OK…
Another treat to find was the preservation of the original African wing – upgraded but still full of fond memories. These two lions are part of the African wing exhibit. Maybe the US Postal Service wants a new postage stamp design?

I loved those old Laser Light Shows. They should definitely bring that back. Sure, they can update the crazy loud music they play. But the experience itself is worth bringing back.
