SF Chronicle: USS McCampbell commissioned in San Francisco

The US Navy’s newest destroyer, the USS McCampbell, was commissioned yesterday at San Francisco’s Pier 32.

The McCampbell was named for Capt. David McCampbell, the Navy’s top flying ace in World War II. It cost $1 billion. At 510 feet long and 9,217 tons, it is as large as a World War II cruiser. It will be based in San Diego. It sails for that port Monday.

The McCampbell is a sister ship to the USS Cole.
