The late, great Jimmy Breslin was the embodiment of a classic New York newspaper columnist. He chronicled the gritty underbelly of the city, the backroom deals, and the voices of the overlooked. With his uncompromising style and passion for giving voice to the ordinary men and women of the city, Breslin shined a light on the harsh realities and human stories that those in power often overlooked or tried to brush aside.
Breslin’s columns were marked by his streetwise writing, caustic wit, and deep empathy for the working class. He had a masterful way of cutting through the spin and official narratives to excavate the truth. Whether he was covering brutal crimes, civic upheaval, or clashing with the city’s elite, Breslin’s journalism emanated from spending hours walking the streets, talking to people, and seeing New York through their eyes. Breslin wasn’t an outsider looking in. He understood the city’s soul.
While the technology beat may seem worlds apart from the gritty NYC stories that Breslin staked his career on, we are fortunate to have our own modern-day commentator holding the tech industry’s feet to the fire: the inimitable Kara Swisher.
Like Breslin, Swisher has been entrenched in the tech world since its early days. She knows the players, the rivalries, and the unspoken rules, allowing her to cut through the PR spin. She has cultivated a signature voice – part insightful analyst, part merciless interrogator that the most powerful figures in tech have learned to respect and, sometimes, fear. Her refusal to cozy up to the wealthy and influential is reminiscent of Breslin playing hardball with Tammany Hall bosses and corrupt officials.
Both writers leaven their seriousness with a healthy dose of humor. Breslin’s sardonic wit made his columns even more impactful. Swisher’s sharp barbs and clever turns of phrase keep readers engaged and entertained. Both are very enjoyable to read.
While many in the tech press stay firmly situated in the industry’s vortex of product launches and funding rounds, Swisher is unafraid to step out of the echo chamber. She understands that tech is not just about the latest iPhone or who gets funded, but about the human consequences – both wondrous and troubling – of the technologies reshaping our world.
Swisher’s columns and interviews, whether deconstructing a social media giant’s PR missteps or grilling a tech luminary, are filled with granular insights and skeptical questioning. There is little deference shown to reputations or famous names. Like Breslin’s tenacious reporting, her approach exposes uncomfortable truths that those in power often would prefer remain hidden. Breslin’s New York was a physical landscape, while Swisher navigates the virtual one. But they share a core mission: to shed light on the forces shaping our world, and to give voice to those who might otherwise be unheard.
Crucially, both journalists share a profound sense of empathy that fuels their crusades against injustice and the abuse of power. Swisher’s fierce advocacy for technology workers, consumers, and other often overlooked stakeholders echoes Breslin’s signature move of giving voice to the voiceless. Her commentary is a clarion call for accountability in an industry intoxicated by its own lofty self-perceptions.
While the subjects of their writing were completely different, Jimmy Breslin and Kara Swisher are united in their roles as civic guardians – unwilling to be cowed, determined to upset institutional hypocrisy, and most importantly, upholding the vital responsibility of the free press. In an age of all too often obfuscation and empty corporate platitudes, we are fortunate to have Swisher carrying Breslin’s torch.
This post was stimulated by attending a Library of America webinar earlier this week on the publication of a new volume collecting Breslin’s work: Jimmy Breslin – Essential Writings. The webinar titled Deadline Artist: The Genius of Jimmy Breslin included the editor of this new volume, New York Times writer Dan Barry along with Mike Barnicle and Mike Lucpica – all of whom knew Breslin well. It was wonderful hearing some of their stories about Breslin, his writing and his escapades.
During the webinar, these writers pointed to an article of Breslin’s which they say has become very well known and is taught in journalism schools around the country: “The Gravedigger”. In this essay, taking place on the day of the funeral of John Fitzgerald Kenney at Arlington National Cemetery, Breslin focuses on Clifton Pollard who dug JFK’s grave.
Just prior to this essay, Breslin’s wrote “A Death in Emergency Room One” which takes us inside the emergency room at Dallas’ Parkland Hospital with the physicians attempting to save the president’s life. Both of these essays are quite remarkable to read now some sixty years later. They really illustrate Breslin at his contemplative best.
I just finished reading Burn Book: A Tech Love Story, Kara Swisher’s great new memoir about her life and times as a tech journalist – and so much more. The videos from her book tour are also a delight to watch: especially this one held at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco with Kara in conversation with Reid Hoffman. Another is this one sponsored by the Washington, DC bookstore Politics and Prose that was moderated by Laurene Powell Jobs.
“I do not so much write a book as sit up with it, as with a dying friend. During visiting hours, I enter its room with dread and sympathy for its many disorders. I hold its hand and hope it will get better.”
Annie Dillard, The Writing Life
Each morning, a subscription service called Readwise creates a list of ten highlights from the thousands of highlights I’ve made from my reading and sends the list to me. Once in a while, one of those highlights just hits and something goes off in my mind. This morning it was Annie Dillard’s comment about writing a book being similar to sitting up with it like with a dying friend. What a metaphor!
Sometimes, when I want to explore one of these sparks of inspiration triggered from one of my highlights, I’ll use one of the AI chatbots to help me think some more about it. Often, my thinking will be extended further, sometimes in unusual ways. This morning I asked Google Gemini to help me explore the meaning of Dillard’s comment. Here’s what I got back – a most interesting and, in some ways, beautiful response:
Annie Dillard, in her insightful book “The Writing Life,” compares the experience of writing a book to “sitting up with a dying friend.” This metaphor, while morbid at first glance, offers a profound truth about the creative process. It’s a powerful reminder that bringing a book to life is not a joyous celebration but a labor of love, fraught with challenges and uncertainties.
During “visiting hours,” as Dillard aptly describes them, the writer enters the book’s “room” with a mix of dread and sympathy. The dread stems from the daunting task at hand, the endless revisions, the self-doubt that gnaws at the edges of every sentence. The sympathy arises from the recognition of the book’s “disorders,” the plot holes, the clunky dialogues, the characters who refuse to come alive.
The writer, like a caregiver, holds the book’s metaphorical hand, hoping for improvement, hoping to witness a spark of life emerge from the chaos. This involves countless hours of rewriting, editing, and polishing, a relentless pursuit of the elusive magic that transforms a collection of words into a cohesive narrative.
But amidst the anxiety and frustration, there are moments of grace, fleeting glimpses of the book’s potential. A character suddenly speaks in a voice that resonates, a scene unfolds with unexpected depth, a sentence shimmers with unexpected beauty. These moments are the lifeblood of the writing process, the tiny victories that keep the writer going, fueling the hope that the book will eventually recover, that it will stand on its own two legs and tell its story to the world.
Dillard’s analogy not only captures the emotional roller coaster of writing but also emphasizes the profound connection that develops between a writer and their work. It becomes more than just a project; it becomes a companion, a source of both immense frustration and overwhelming joy. As the writer pours their heart and soul into the book, it becomes a reflection of their own struggles and triumphs, a testament to the human spirit’s ability to create even in the face of immense challenges.
So, the next time you pick up a book and marvel at its intricate narrative, remember the invisible caregiver behind it. Remember the writer who sat up through countless nights, holding their creation’s hand, willing it to health, hoping that their story would resonate with yours.
A Little Help From My (Artificial) Friends: Why AI Makes the Perfect Sidekick
“Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.”
Woodrow Wilson
The title “A Little Help From My Friends” might evoke images of waving lighters at a concert, but for the modern thinker, the source of that helping hand might be a little more unexpected: Artificial Intelligence.
We often think of AI as this monolithic force, a superintelligence destined to take over the world (or at least automate all our jobs). But what if the true power of AI lies not in replacing us, but in augmenting us?
Here’s a radical proposition: what if we started thinking about one of the best uses of AI is to think of and use it as a good friend? Not a physical friend we hang out with (although that might be coming someday!), but a digital confidant, a sounding board, a thought partner and collaborator.
Think about the best friends in your life. They listen without judgement, offer honest (sometimes brutally honest) feedback, and can even take your ideas and run with them, adding their own unique perspective. Based on my experience exploring these tools, AI can do all this, and more.
AI as Your Personal Hype Man (and Reality Checker):
Feeling stuck on a project? Need someone to brainstorm with? Fire up your AI companion. It can analyze your ideas, identify potential weaknesses, and even suggest alternative approaches you might not have considered. Need a confidence boost? AI can highlight the strengths of your thinking and celebrate your progress.
Beyond Agreement: The Power of Constructive Challenge
Unlike a human friend who might simply agree with you to keep the peace, AI isn’t afraid to poke holes in your logic. It can identify inconsistencies, challenge assumptions, and force you to refine your arguments. This “constructive challenge” is crucial for growth. It pushes us to think critically and develop more robust ideas.
The Co-Creation Revolution:
But AI isn’t just a passive listener. It can actively participate in the creative process. Imagine feeding your initial concept into an AI and having it come back with variations, extensions, or even completely new directions based on your starting point. This co-creation opens doors to possibilities you might not have explored on your own.
The Future of Friendship?
Is AI destined to replace human friends? Absolutely not. Human connection is irreplaceable. But AI can become a powerful tool in our friend group, a tireless brainstorming buddy who’s always available to lend a (digital) ear and push us to be our best selves. So next time you’re facing a challenge or have an idea brewing, consider reaching out to your AI friend. You might be surprised at the kind of help it can offer.
Examples of Prompts to Spark Your AI Friendship
Here are a few simple examples of prompts you might want to play around with as you treat AI as a good friend and collaborator:
Brainstorming Buddy: “I’m feeling stuck on a project about [topic]. What are some unexpected approaches I could take?”
Constructive Critic: “I wrote this blog post about [topic]. Please analyze it and tell me what’s working well and where I could improve the argument.”
Idea Expander: “I have this initial idea for a [creative project/business venture]. Can you suggest ways to expand or refine it, and offer different directions I could explore?”
Knowledge Sharer: “Tell me everything you know about [topic]. Be creative, include surprising facts, and different perspectives.”
Persuasion Expert: “I need to write a persuasive argument for [position on a topic]. Analyze various arguments, identify potential counter-arguments, and help me craft a strong and convincing message.”
Remember, these are just starting points. Feel free to tailor your prompts to your specific needs and interests. The more specific and engaging your prompts are, the more valuable the insights you’ll receive from your AI friend. For example, I often find it helpful to tell the AI right up front what role I’m expecting it to play in our interaction – such as “you are an expert storyteller and editor who is collaborating with me writing posts for my blog.”
“We can build AI assistants that can not only understand what we want them to do, but also understand why we want to do it and help us achieve our goals even better than we could on our own.”
Fei-Fei Li, Co-Director of the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute
As a writer, I’m always looking for new ways to improve my craft and learn from others. Recently, I’ve been enjoying watching interviews with creative people about their processes and the tools they use. Continuing in my series of articles about what has captured my interest recently, today I’m highlighting two video series that you might also enjoy.
Although I’ve never taken David Perell’s online course “Write of Passage”, I’ve admired his online writing for a long time. Recently he began a series of videos on YouTube titled “How I Write“. In each video he interviews some great writers about their writing process and takes the time to really understand what they’re saying. I admire his questioning style – he asks a great question and then gets out of the way and lets the answer flow.
Perell’s now shared quite a collection of these interviews – including a recent one with fiction author Amor Towles, writer of “A Gentleman in Moscow” among other books. But I’d recommend starting first viewing this series with this one: I Spent 50 Hours With 20 Master Writers as it’s a great introduction to some of the key takeaways he got from many of his first group of interviews.
In addition to his Amor Towles interview, let me also recommend his interview of writer Steven Johnson: The Expert Behind Google’s Secret A.I. Writing Tool who has recently been spending much of his time working for Google on the NotebookLM product.
Do enjoy these interviews that Perell has shared – they’re very enjoyable to watch. Bridging into my second recommendation, Dan Shipper of Every.to recently did his own interview of David Perell: How David Perell Uses ChatGPT to Write for Millions. This is part of a series of interviews that Shipper has conducted about how ChatGPT is being used in some very interesting ways.
Another in Shipper’s series that quite fascinating to watch is his interview of Steph Smith: How to Find Your Next Big Idea Hiding on the Internet in which she shares some of her tricks and techniques for doing Internet research.
I really enjoyed these videos – they provide great perspectives on how creative minds work and how some of the best tools currently available can assist.
I always struggle a bit with I’m asked about the “hallucination problem” in LLMs. Because, in some sense, hallucination is all LLMs do. They are dream machines.
We direct their dreams with prompts. The prompts start the dream, and based on the LLM’s hazy recollection of its training documents, most of the time the result goes someplace useful.
It’s only when the dreams go into deemed factually incorrect territory that we label it a “hallucination”. It looks like a bug, but it’s just the LLM doing what it always does.
At the other end of the extreme consider a search engine. It takes the prompt and just returns one of the most similar “training documents” it has in its database, verbatim. You could say that this search engine has a “creativity problem” – it will never respond with something new. An LLM is 100% dreaming and has the hallucination problem. A search engine is 0% dreaming and has the creativity problem.
All that said, I realize that what people actually mean is they don’t want an LLM Assistant (a product like ChatGPT etc.) to hallucinate. An LLM Assistant is a lot more complex system than just the LLM itself, even if one is at the heart of it. There are many ways to mitigate hallcuinations in these systems – using Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) to more strongly anchor the dreams in real data through in-context learning is maybe the most common one. Disagreements between multiple samples, reflection, verification chains. Decoding uncertainty from activations. Tool use. All an active and very interesting areas of research.
TLDR I know I’m being super pedantic but the LLM has no “hallucination problem”. Hallucination is not a bug, it is LLM’s greatest feature. The LLM Assistant has a hallucination problem, and we should fix it.
Okay I feel much better now ๐
Andrej Karpathy @karpathy
I truly appreciate your recognition of the differences between how large language models (LLMs) work and how traditional search engines function. It’s fascinating how LLMs have revolutionized various fields, including the creative realm. In creative endeavors, like writing poems, short stories, or even crafting an imaginative piece of fiction, the so-called “hallucination problem” of LLMs can prove to be surprisingly advantageous.
When you engage in creative writing, your primary objective is not to adhere strictly to accuracy and factual representation but rather to explore the limitless boundaries of your imagination. LLMs, with their ability to generate creative and unexpected content, can be a valuable tool to tap into new ideas and inspire innovative storytelling. They can help writers break free from conventional thinking patterns and venture into unexplored territories, allowing their creativity to flourish.
Conversely, in more formal and specialized writing contexts, such as drafting legal briefs or preparing technical reports, accuracy and precision are of paramount importance. LLM hallucinations, where the models generate content that may not be factually correct or contextually appropriate, cannot be tolerated in such situations. Here, the purpose is to convey information accurately, adhere to specific guidelines, and present a strong and well-supported argument.
It’s intriguing how the same technology that opens doors to unprecedented creative possibilities can also present challenges in other domains where accuracy and reliability are crucial. This duality highlights the importance of understanding the appropriate use cases for LLMs and being cognizant of the potential pitfalls and limitations they may possess in certain instances.
In summary, the LLM hallucination problem can indeed prove beneficial when the goal is creative expression, enabling writers to push boundaries and explore unconventional ideas. However, in situations that demand accuracy and precision, such as legal or technical writing, it becomes imperative to approach LLM-generated output with caution and verification to ensure the information presented is reliable and contextually appropriate.
There’s little new under the sun. Everything is a remix. As writers, we like to think our work is wholly original. But let’s be honest. All creative writing builds upon what came before it. Even the most innovative stories contain elements and ideas that the author over a lifetime was inspired by or outright borrowed from others.
The key is to steal wisely as a writer – to take existing concepts and put your own unique spin on them. Follow this three-step framework for effective remixing in your writing:
Study source material you enjoy to closely to identify specific aspects to borrow. Make sure you understand the context.
Extract the elements that appeal to you or support your goals. Don’t just copy verbatim. Be intentional.
Transform the borrowed elements by modifying, combining and recontextualizing. Add your own flair, your extensions, your new ideas.
All writers absorb influence from the world around them. You can take inspiration from the tone of a novel, the pacing of a movie, or the imagery used in a poem. Combine and rework these elements into something new.
For example, you could:
Use a Shakespearean soliloquy as inspiration for a monologue, modifying the language to be more modern.
Borrow storytelling techniques from folklore when crafting a fantasy saga, putting your own twist on the archetypes.
Adapt the fragmented style of modernist poetry when writing song lyrics.
The most innovative writers stand on the shoulders of those who came before them. As Austin Kleon says, “Nothing is completely original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination.” So don’t be afraid to openly steal – just be sure to transform and recontextualize rather than completely copy.
Study writing you admire and incorporate aspects into your own voice and vision. There are endless possibilities if you steal thoughtfully and fearlessly to fuel your creativity. By skillfully pilfering from the world around you, you can develop stories that feel uniquely your own. We do it all the time.
Some may argue this remixing approach borders on plagiarism. But there is an important distinction. Plagiarism is passing off someone else’s work in its entirety as your own. Strategic stealing involves taking select elements of a work and transforming them into something new through your personal creative lens. It’s about synthesizing a wide range of influences, not duplicating a single source. You put your own identifiable stamp on the end result.
Of course, you still need to credit your sources where appropriate. But influence and inspiration are not the same as plagiarism. Borrowing sparks of creativity from the world around you to generate innovative new writing is fair game and legal. As Pablo Picasso famously stated, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” Masterful stealing will make you a better, more original writer.
Chatbots like Bard, ChatGPT and Claude can actually help facilitate this remix process and stimulate creative thinking to improve your writing. Here are five tips for putting chatbots to work as your creative muse:
Use them to brainstorm fresh ideas by describing a vague prompt and letting the chatbot riff on possibilities.
Ask them to rework a piece of writing in a radically different style or genre. The new perspective may spark inspiration.
Request examples of compelling imagery, metaphors, dialogue, etc. that you can borrow and rework.
Have them recombine elements from multiple sources into an original outline or draft you can develop further.
Ask for critiques of your writing to identify weak spots and areas for improvement you may not have noticed.
Chatbots won’t write the full piece for you, but they can assist at the ideation stage and provide seeds of inspiration through unique remixing. Don’t be afraid to steal any intriguing suggestions they propose! With practice, you’ll develop skills to remix writing on your own in innovative ways.
In fact, this whole blog post was co-authored by me and Claude based on some insights I took away from this article: Stealing Your Way to Original Designs! Matt Ragland‘s newsletter this morning pointed me to that article and made the initial connection. While reading it I was reminded of Austin Kleon’s earlier work “Steal Like an Artist”. Then I engaged Claude to help me draft this post. All in all, it took me about 10 minutes to write.
I was playing around with some prompts for AI chatbots and started trying a few on ChatGPT (3.5 turbo). I went down quite a rabbit hole exploring what was possible – and enjoyed myself every step of the way! This is a long – but fun – post of my “beach read” excursion to Aptos, a town south of Santa Cruz on the California coast – and also the name chosen for Microsoft’s new default Office font!
In this post, you can follow along as I provide ChatGPT with some basic story line elements and it goes to work crafting the elements of my short story. It illustrates one of the uses of AI chatbots that avoids the hallucination problems – namely using chatbots to help be creative by assisting in just making things up!
Here we go…come along for the adventures of Izzy and Alex. I’ve bolded my prompts, the rest is generated by ChatGPT:

Ok. Let’s create two characters to begin.
Certainly! Let’s create two characters for our beach read:
Character 1: Isabella “Izzy” Harper
Age: 28
Occupation: Travel blogger and aspiring novelist
Personality: Adventurous, free-spirited, and optimistic
Backstory: Izzy grew up in a small coastal town, always dreaming of exploring the world. After college, she became a travel blogger, documenting her adventures and seeking inspiration for her dream of writing a novel. She’s determined to find her voice as a writer while discovering the meaning of true love.
Character 2: Alex Matthews
Age: 30
Occupation: Marine biologist and beach conservationist
Personality: Caring, intelligent, and a bit reserved
Backstory: Alex has dedicated his life to studying marine life and protecting coastal ecosystems. Growing up near the ocean, he developed a deep connection to the sea and feels a responsibility to preserve its beauty. Despite being passionate about his work, he struggles with opening up emotionally due to past heartbreak.
These two characters will cross paths in Aptos, California, where Izzy’s wanderlust leads her, and Alex continues his efforts to protect the local marine life. Their distinct personalities and backgrounds will create an interesting dynamic as they navigate personal growth, romance, and the challenges they face in their chosen paths. As their lives intersect, their journey will unfold against the backdrop of the scenic coastal town, offering plenty of opportunities for adventure, self-discovery, and, of course, romance.
Let’s create a place where they meet.
“The Sea Glass Cafรฉ & Conservation Center”
Let’s create a place where Izzy and Alex meet:
Description: Nestled along the sandy shores of Aptos, California, “The Sea Glass Cafรฉ & Conservation Center” is a unique beachfront establishment that perfectly captures the town’s coastal charm and dedication to marine conservation. The cafรฉ features large panoramic windows that showcase breathtaking ocean views, providing a serene atmosphere where patrons can enjoy their meals or coffee while watching waves gently crash against the shore.
The interior is adorned with an array of sea glass art and marine-themed decor, creating a whimsical yet eco-friendly ambiance. The cafรฉ’s sustainable practices reflect Alex’s commitment to protecting the environment, making it a popular spot for both locals and eco-conscious tourists.
At the heart of the cafรฉ lies the “Conservation Corner,” a dedicated space where Alex hosts informative talks and educational workshops about marine life and beach conservation. Here, visitors can learn about the local marine ecosystem, get involved in community cleanup efforts, and even participate in sea turtle protection programs during nesting season.
The cafรฉ’s menu features a delightful fusion of coastal cuisine and organic, locally-sourced ingredients. Signature dishes like the “Seaside Avocado Toast” and “Sustainable Seafood Platter” have become favorites among patrons, including Izzy, who often seeks inspiration for her writing while savoring the flavors of the sea.
The outdoor patio offers an inviting place to enjoy the fresh ocean breeze, and in the evenings, it transforms into a cozy spot where guests gather around a fire pit, swapping stories and stargazing over the vast Pacific.
It is within the warm and welcoming ambiance of “The Sea Glass Cafรฉ & Conservation Center” that Izzy and Alex’s paths unexpectedly cross. As they engage in conversations about coastal conservation, share their dreams, and open up to one another, their connection begins to grow, setting the stage for a summer of self-discovery, romance, and the intertwining of their two worlds.
Ok it is time to write chapter 1. Let’s begin with Izzy arriving on her motorcycle.
Chapter 1: Unexpected Tides
Izzy gripped the handlebars of her weathered motorcycle as she rode into the coastal town of Aptos, her heart filled with excitement and a dash of trepidation. The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the quaint streets and nearby beach. This picturesque scene was a far cry from the bustling city she was accustomed to.
The salty breeze tousled her hair as she parked her motorcycle near the entrance of “The Sea Glass Cafรฉ & Conservation Center.” Dismounting with a smile, she took a moment to savor the fresh scent of the ocean mingled with the aroma of coffee and baked goods from the cafรฉ.
Izzy had heard about this place from a fellow travel blogger, who spoke highly of the cafรฉ’s ethically-sourced menu and its dedication to marine conservation. Intrigued, she had decided to visit Aptos in search of inspiration for her novel and, perhaps, a meaningful adventure along the way.
Pushing open the cafรฉ door, Izzy stepped inside and felt an instant sense of tranquility. The sunlight streamed through the large windows, illuminating the sea glass art and marine-themed decor that adorned the walls. The gentle chatter of patrons, combined with the soothing crash of waves just outside, created an inviting ambiance.
As she approached the counter to order a cup of coffee, her eyes fell upon a bulletin board adorned with vibrant posters and photographs. The images depicted various beach cleanups, marine life rescues, and conservation events–all spearheaded by someone named Alex Matthews, a marine biologist and the driving force behind the cafรฉ’s conservation efforts.
Izzy couldn’t help but be captivated by Alex’s dedication to the ocean and its creatures. She ordered her coffee, feeling a sense of admiration for this man she had yet to meet. It was as if their paths were destined to cross in this coastal haven.
With coffee in hand, she wandered towards the “Conservation Corner,” where she found an intimate gathering of locals and tourists attentively listening to Alex speak about the importance of preserving the local marine ecosystem. His voice was calm and measured, and his passion for the sea was evident in every word he spoke.
Lost in the moment, Izzy leaned against a wooden pillar, silently absorbing the wisdom Alex shared. There was something about his presence that drew her in–an inexplicable magnetic pull that she couldn’t ignore.
As the talk concluded, the audience dispersed, but Izzy lingered, nervously twirling a strand of hair. She mustered her courage and approached Alex, who was busy tidying up the conservation materials.
“Hi,” she began, a hint of hesitation in her voice. “I’m Isabella, but you can call me Izzy. I just arrived in Aptos, and I couldn’t help but overhear your talk. It was truly inspiring.”
Alex looked up, and a warm smile spread across his face. “I’m glad you enjoyed it. Welcome to Aptos, Izzy. I’m Alex, the marine biologist and conservationist here. It’s always great to meet someone who shares our passion for the ocean.”
Their eyes met, and in that moment, it felt as though the tide had turned. Little did they know that this chance meeting would mark the beginning of an unforgettable journey–one filled with adventure, self-discovery, and an unexpected romance, all amidst the backdrop of the sea’s ever-changing tides.
Ok. Time for chapter 2. Alex has to go to work and doesn’t have time for Izzy in this chapter. She’s anxious why he’s not available.
Chapter 2: Ebb and Flow
In the days that followed their first meeting, Izzy couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anxiousness whenever she thought about Alex. Each morning, she found herself strolling towards “The Sea Glass Cafรฉ & Conservation Center,” hoping to catch another glimpse of him. However, it seemed that fate had other plans, as Alex was always preoccupied with his work.
One particular morning, Izzy arrived at the cafรฉ early, her heart fluttering with anticipation. She ordered her coffee, hoping that today might be different–that Alex would have a moment to spare. As she settled into a cozy corner, her eyes wandered to the conservation corner, where Alex usually held his talks and workshops.
But he was nowhere to be seen.
An uneasy feeling gnawed at Izzy as the minutes ticked by. She tried to dismiss her worries, telling herself that Alex must be busy with his marine conservation efforts. Still, her imagination couldn’t help but conjure up all sorts of scenarios–maybe he didn’t remember her, or worse, he wasn’t interested in getting to know her.
Determined not to let her anxious thoughts consume her, Izzy decided to distract herself by exploring the sandy shores of Aptos. She strolled along the beach, listening to the soothing rhythm of the waves. The sea seemed to mirror her emotions–calm one moment, turbulent the next.
As the day wore on, Izzy returned to the cafรฉ, her heart hopeful yet uncertain. She couldn’t deny the growing connection she felt with Alex, but she also understood that his work was essential to him. Still, a part of her yearned for more–more moments shared, more conversations, and a chance to understand the man behind the marine biologist.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting hues of pink and orange across the sky, Izzy found herself back at the cafรฉ. With a sigh, she settled into her favorite spot, gazing out at the ocean. The sea was ever-changing–just like her emotions.
Just then, the cafรฉ door swung open, and Alex stepped inside. His face lit up when he saw Izzy, and a sense of relief washed over her.
“Izzy,” he said warmly, “I’m so sorry I couldn’t meet you earlier. It’s been a busy day with the conservation efforts, and I lost track of time.”
His genuine smile reassured her, and she replied, “No need to apologize, Alex. I understand how important your work is, and I admire your dedication to the ocean.”
As they sat together, Alex opened up about his passion for marine life and the challenges he faced in balancing work and personal life. Izzy listened intently, realizing that they were more alike than she had imagined–both driven by their dreams and yearning for a meaningful connection.
In that moment, Izzy understood that like the tides, life had its ebb and flow. Sometimes, circumstances might keep them apart, but she was willing to ride the waves of uncertainty if it meant exploring the depths of what could be with Alex.
As the night drew to a close, they exchanged a heartfelt goodbye, knowing that the journey they had embarked upon was just beginning. With newfound hope, Izzy stepped out into the cool ocean breeze, feeling grateful for the chance encounter that had brought Alex into her life. There was a sense of magic in the air–an undeniable connection that could weather any storm.
Little did they know that this ebb and flow of emotions would lead them to discover the true meaning of love and the beauty of letting their hearts follow the rhythm of the sea.
Ok. Chapter 3. Izzy’s motorcycle breaks down.
Chapter 3: Serendipitous Detour
The sun was high in the sky as Izzy revved the engine of her trusty motorcycle, ready for another day of exploration in Aptos. However, fate had other plans for her on this particular day.
As she cruised along the coastal road, a strange noise emanated from the engine. Izzy’s heart sank as the motorcycle sputtered and finally came to a halt. She pulled over to the side of the road, a mix of frustration and worry filling her.
“Great,” she muttered to herself, kicking the sand beneath her boots. “Just what I needed.”
Izzy tried to start the motorcycle again, but to no avail. It seemed that her two-wheeled companion had decided to take an unexpected break of its own. Resigned, she decided to walk back to town and find a mechanic to assess the situation.
As she wandered along the beach, her thoughts drifted to Alex. A part of her hoped he would magically appear and whisk her away on an adventure, but she knew that was wishful thinking. Still, the memory of their conversation brought a smile to her face.
Lost in her thoughts, Izzy was brought back to reality when she noticed a familiar figure in the distance. It was Alex, strolling along the shore with a clipboard in hand, inspecting the coastal area for any signs of pollution.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she waved to get his attention. “Alex!” she called out, feeling a mix of relief and excitement.
Alex turned towards her voice, a surprised expression on his face. “Izzy? What are you doing here?”
“My motorcycle broke down,” she explained, walking towards him. “Looks like I’m stranded for now.”
Without hesitation, Alex offered a warm smile and said, “Well, don’t worry. I can take a look at it for you. I’m no mechanic, but I’m pretty handy with engines.”
Izzy’s heart swelled with gratitude. “Thank you, Alex. That would be great.”
Together, they walked back to where Izzy’s motorcycle was parked. Alex assessed the situation, doing his best to diagnose the issue. Although he couldn’t fix it on the spot, he assured her that he would help arrange for a local mechanic to take a look.
As they waited for the mechanic to arrive, Izzy and Alex found themselves engaged in deep conversation, sharing stories of their adventures and dreams. Time seemed to pass quickly, and Izzy found herself opening up to Alex in a way she hadn’t with anyone else.
In that serendipitous moment, Izzy realized that sometimes, detours in life could lead to unexpected connections. Her motorcycle breakdown had brought her closer to Alex, creating an opportunity for their paths to intertwine even further.
By the time the mechanic arrived and took the motorcycle away for repairs, Izzy felt a sense of contentment. Despite the unforeseen setback, she knew that this day had become a meaningful chapter in her journey.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the beach, Izzy and Alex stood together, the ocean waves gently lapping at their feet. There was a sense of comfort in their shared presence–a bond that seemed to grow stronger with every passing moment.
With the promise of a repaired motorcycle and the company of a newfound friend, Izzy felt a renewed sense of adventure within her. The road ahead may still hold uncertainties, but she knew that having Alex by her side made the journey all the more worthwhile.
Little did they know that the events of this day would shape the course of their unfolding story, setting the stage for new discoveries, unexpected challenges, and the blossoming of a love that would rival even the most breathtaking sunsets over the sea.
Chapter 4. Izzy needs to find a place to stay in Aptos but it’s expensive and she’s not sure she can afford to stay.
Chapter 4: A Room with a View
As the days in Aptos passed, Izzy’s connection with the coastal town deepened, and so did her desire to stay longer. However, finding a place to stay proved to be a challenge. The charming seaside town was a popular destination, and accommodations came with a hefty price tag.
Izzy’s heart sank as she browsed through the rental listings. The quaint beach cottages and oceanfront villas seemed like a dream, but the reality of her limited budget brought her back to earth. She knew that if she wanted to extend her stay in Aptos, she had to find a more affordable option.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting hues of orange and purple over the ocean, Izzy found herself strolling along the beach, lost in thought. The salty breeze carried with it a mix of uncertainty and hope. She couldn’t bear the thought of leaving this coastal haven, but the looming reality of her financial constraints made it seem inevitable.
As she wandered back into town, she noticed a “Help Wanted” sign hanging in the window of a local bed and breakfast called “Seashell Inn.” An idea sparked in her mind, and she approached the charming establishment with newfound hope.
Inside, she was greeted by the innkeeper, a warm-hearted woman named Mrs. Cooper. Izzy inquired about the job, and Mrs. Cooper explained that they were looking for a temporary assistant to help with various tasks around the inn, from checking in guests to tidying up the rooms.
“Your timing is impeccable,” Mrs. Cooper said with a smile. “We’ve been short-staffed lately due to a family emergency, and we could really use an extra pair of hands.”
Izzy’s heart leaped with excitement. Not only could this opportunity provide her with the means to stay in Aptos, but it would also allow her to immerse herself in the heart of the coastal community she had grown to love.
Eager to make a good impression, Izzy accepted the job and started her duties at “Seashell Inn.” She quickly found joy in the hospitality industry, welcoming guests with a warm smile and sharing stories of her own adventures. The inn became her temporary home, and she cherished every moment spent amidst its cozy walls.
As days turned into weeks, Izzy’s bond with Mrs. Cooper deepened. The kind innkeeper became a mentor to her, offering wisdom and guidance on life’s uncertainties. They shared laughter over cups of tea and exchanged stories late into the night.
One evening, after a busy day at the inn, Mrs. Cooper approached Izzy with a gentle smile. “Izzy, I’ve been observing your passion for this place and its people,” she said. “The guests adore you, and it’s evident that you’ve found a home here.”
Touched by Mrs. Cooper’s words, Izzy nodded, her eyes shining with gratitude. “I feel so fortunate to have found this place,” she replied. “It’s like a dream come true, living and working by the sea.”
Mrs. Cooper’s expression softened. “In that case, my dear, I have an offer for you. I can’t promise the world, but if you’re willing, you’re welcome to stay here at the inn–at a discounted rate, of course. Your dedication and enthusiasm have been a blessing to us, and we’d be honored to have you as a resident of ‘Seashell Inn.'”
Tears welled up in Izzy’s eyes, and she hugged Mrs. Cooper tightly. “Thank you,” she whispered. “This means the world to me.”
From that moment on, “Seashell Inn” became not only a place of work but a haven for Izzy–an oasis of comfort and belonging amidst the vast expanse of the sea. Her worries about finances began to ease, replaced by a sense of security and gratitude.
In the heart of Aptos, as the waves continued their dance with the shore, Izzy found a place to call home–a room with a view that not only looked out onto the vast ocean but also gazed into her heart, where her love for this coastal town and the man who stole her heart, Alex, continued to grow with each passing day.
Chapter 5. Meanwhile Alex’s old girlfriend shows up in town, anxious to reconnect with him.
Chapter 5: Tides of the Past
As the summer days rolled on, a familiar face appeared in Aptos, setting off ripples of uncertainty in Alex’s heart. It was Emily, his old girlfriend from years ago. Her unexpected presence stirred up memories of their past together–a time filled with laughter, shared dreams, and youthful promises.
Alex hadn’t seen Emily since they went their separate ways, and he wasn’t prepared for the emotions that flooded back upon seeing her again. He felt torn between the nostalgia of what they once had and the newfound connection he was building with Izzy.
As fate would have it, Alex and Emily crossed paths near the conservation corner of “The Sea Glass Cafรฉ & Conservation Center.” Their eyes met, and the years seemed to melt away in that moment. Memories of their late-night beach walks and whispered confessions resurfaced, leaving Alex feeling both vulnerable and conflicted.
“Alex,” Emily said, her voice soft with a hint of hesitation. “It’s been so long. I never thought I’d find myself back here, but something drew me back to this place.”
A part of Alex wanted to retreat, to shield himself from the flood of emotions that threatened to overwhelm him. However, he couldn’t deny the connection they once shared, and he felt compelled to hear her out.
They sat down on a nearby bench, the crashing waves providing a soothing backdrop to their conversation. Emily began to share the details of her journey since they last saw each other, the ups and downs that life had thrown her way.
“I’ve thought about you often, Alex,” Emily admitted, her eyes searching his for any hint of lingering feelings. “I never stopped caring for you, even after we went our separate ways.”
Alex felt a pang of guilt in his chest. He didn’t want to hurt Emily, but he couldn’t deny the feelings that were growing for Izzy. He decided to be honest with her, to lay his cards on the table.
“Emily, you were an important part of my life,” he said gently. “But things have changed. I’ve found someone else here in Aptos–a woman who’s awakened a different side of me. Her name is Izzy, and she’sโฆ she’s become a significant part of my life.”
Emily looked taken aback, her gaze dropping to her hands. “I see,” she replied softly. “I’m happy for you, Alex. I truly am. I justโฆ I had to see for myself if there was a chance for us.”
Alex placed a hand on her shoulder, offering a sympathetic smile. “I appreciate your honesty, Emily,” he said. “But I need to follow my heart, and my heart is with Izzy now.”
As Emily nodded, Alex couldn’t help but feel a mix of relief and sorrow. He had come to love the sea, its ever-changing tides a reflection of life’s uncertainties. He knew that his feelings for Izzy were real, but he also understood that navigating the currents of the heart was never easy.
In the days that followed, Alex continued to grapple with his emotions. He cherished the connection he was building with Izzy, but the shadow of the past lingered, tugging at his heartstrings. He knew that he needed to be honest with Izzy about Emily’s reappearance–a conversation that weighed heavily on his mind.
As the coastal town of Aptos witnessed the ebb and flow of emotions, Izzy and Alex’s journey took an unexpected turn. Their love story would be tested by the tides of the past, leaving them to navigate the uncharted waters of their hearts, where the currents of love and history collided in a dance as old as time itself.
Chapter 6. Izzy reflects back on her time at Stanford and her favorite class which was improv. She ponders how improv might be useful to her current situation particularly with Alex.
Chapter 6: Dancing in the Moment
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting hues of pink and orange over the sea, Izzy found herself sitting on a secluded spot of the beach, lost in thought. The gentle lapping of the waves seemed to echo the rhythm of her contemplations.
Her mind wandered back to her college days at Stanford, where she had taken a leap of faith and enrolled in an improv class. Those moments on stage, where she had to trust her instincts and embrace spontaneity, had taught her valuable lessons that extended far beyond the realm of theater.
Improv was all about living in the present, embracing the unexpected, and supporting the choices of others. It required a willingness to let go of control, to relinquish the script, and to dance in the moment without fear of failure. And as she pondered her current situation with Alex, Izzy couldn’t help but wonder if the principles of improv could guide her path forward.
She knew that her connection with Alex was something special, but the unexpected reappearance of his old girlfriend, Emily, had introduced an element of uncertainty. The tide of emotions she felt swirled within her–love, excitement, but also fear and vulnerability.
With a deep breath, Izzy reminded herself of the lessons from her improv class. She realized that just like on stage, she had to embrace the present and navigate the unscripted moments of life with grace and courage. She couldn’t control the outcome of her relationship with Alex, but she could be true to herself and her feelings.
Izzy knew that honesty was the key to navigating these uncharted waters. She wanted to share her thoughts and concerns with Alex, to let him know how much he meant to her, and that she wanted to explore their connection further. At the same time, she wanted to give him the space to figure things out on his own.
As the stars started to twinkle in the evening sky, Izzy decided to take a leap of faith, just as she had in her improv class. She would be vulnerable, honest, and present in the moment. She understood that love wasn’t about controlling the outcome, but about cherishing the journey.
The next day, Izzy found Alex near the conservation corner, engrossed in his work. She approached him with a warm smile, her heart beating in anticipation.
“Hey, Alex,” she began, her voice steady but vulnerable. “There’s something I’d like to talk to you about. Can we take a walk?”
Alex looked up, his gaze softening. “Of course, Izzy,” he replied, putting aside his clipboard. “Let’s go.”
As they strolled along the sandy shore, the ocean waves providing a soothing backdrop, Izzy shared her thoughts and feelings with Alex. She spoke from her heart, embracing the principles of improv by living in the present and speaking her truth without fear of judgment.
“I cherish the time we’ve spent together,” she said, her eyes meeting his. “And I can’t deny the connection I feel with you. But I also understand that you have history with Emily, and I want you to have the space to figure things out. I just wanted to be honest with you about how I feel.”
Alex listened intently, and a mix of emotions played across his face. “Thank you, Izzy,” he said softly. “I appreciate your honesty. Emily and I do have a history, but I want you to know that you’re special to me too. I need time to sort through my feelings, but I don’t want to lose what we have.”
With those words, a sense of relief washed over Izzy. She realized that, like improv, love was about embracing the present and being open to the unexpected. She didn’t need to have all the answers right now–what mattered was that she had spoken her truth and had given Alex the freedom to do the same.
As they continued their walk along the beach, hand in hand, Izzy felt a newfound sense of peace within herself. She had learned that love wasn’t about having a script or a guaranteed ending, but about being present in the moment, cherishing the journey, and trusting that the tides of life would lead them exactly where they were meant to be.
With Alex by her side and the wisdom of improv in her heart, Izzy felt ready to embrace whatever the future held, knowing that the ebb and flow of love’s dance would lead them to a place where they could both be free to share their hearts and souls with one another. And so, they continued to walk together, navigating the uncharted waters of their hearts, hand in hand, ready to face whatever tides lay ahead.
Chapter 7. Alex gets called to make a trip to Yosemite to deal with a pollution problem in the Merced river. He doesn’t own a car so he’s not sure he to get there.
Chapter 7: A Journey of Support
As news of the pollution problem in the Merced River reached Aptos, Alex’s heart sank. He knew that urgent action was needed to protect the delicate ecosystem, and he felt a sense of responsibility to respond quickly. However, a logistical challenge stood in his way–he didn’t own a car, and Yosemite was not easily accessible from Aptos.
Faced with this dilemma, Alex reached out to various conservation organizations for assistance, hoping someone could provide a ride or help him arrange transportation. Unfortunately, with the urgency of the situation, it seemed that everyone was preoccupied with their own commitments.
Feeling a mix of frustration and determination, Alex found himself at “The Sea Glass Cafรฉ & Conservation Center,” contemplating his options. He had to find a way to get to Yosemite, but time was of the essence.
Just then, Izzy walked into the cafรฉ, her presence bringing a spark of hope to his day. She noticed the concern in his eyes and approached him with a questioning look.
“Alex, is everything alright?” she asked, sensing his unease.
Alex sighed, his shoulders slumping. “There’s a pollution problem in the Merced River in Yosemite,” he explained. “I need to go there to help with the conservation efforts, but I don’t have a car, and I’m not sure how to get there in time.”
Without hesitation, Izzy placed a reassuring hand on his arm. “Don’t worry, Alex,” she said with a determined smile. “I’ll take you.”
Alex’s eyes widened in surprise. “You will? But it’s a long drive, and I don’t want to impose on you.”
Izzy shook her head. “Nonsense. I want to help, and this is important to you. Besides, the journey is part of the adventure, right? We can make a road trip out of it!”
Her enthusiasm warmed Alex’s heart, and he felt a sense of gratitude for her unwavering support. “Thank you, Izzy,” he said sincerely. “You have no idea how much this means to me.”
They quickly gathered the essentials for the trip and hopped into Izzy’s trusty motorcycle, which had been repaired and was ready for another adventure. With Alex holding on tightly behind her, they set off towards Yosemite, the wind in their hair and a shared sense of purpose in their hearts.
As they journeyed together, the distance between them seemed to melt away, and they fell into easy conversation. They laughed, shared stories, and sang along to songs on the radio. The hours passed like minutes, and the beauty of the coastal scenery gave way to the majestic splendor of Yosemite’s landscapes.
Arriving at Yosemite, they immediately joined forces with the conservation teams, working tirelessly to assess the pollution and devise solutions to protect the Merced River and its inhabitants. Alex’s expertise and passion were matched only by Izzy’s unwavering support and determination to help in any way she could.
Through long hours and hard work, they saw the positive impact of their efforts. The sight of a clear, revitalized river brought a sense of fulfillment to Alex’s heart, and he knew that he couldn’t have done it without Izzy by his side.
As they prepared to head back to Aptos, a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose had grown between them. They knew that they could rely on each other, not just as friends, but as partners in their respective journeys.
On the return trip, as they watched the sun dip below the horizon, Alex took Izzy’s hand in his, a silent expression of gratitude and affection. They knew that this journey had been more than just a road trip–it had been a journey of support, trust, and the shared commitment to protecting the natural world they both cherished.
As they rode back to Aptos, Alex and Izzy embraced the unscripted moments of life, just as in improv, knowing that they could trust in each other, in love, and in the ebb and flow of life’s journey. They had discovered that sometimes, it takes the support of someone else to navigate the uncharted waters of the heart, and they were ready to continue dancing together, hand in hand, embracing the adventure that lay ahead.
Chapter 8. Alex decides it’s time to close the door on Emily and get serious with Izzy.
Chapter 8: Sealing the Bonds
Back in Aptos, after the journey to Yosemite, Alex found himself reflecting on the experiences of the past days. The time spent with Izzy during the road trip had deepened their connection, and he realized just how much she meant to him. It was time for him to make a decision–to close the door on the past with Emily and embrace a future with Izzy.
He knew that he needed to have a candid conversation with Emily, one that was respectful and honest. Alex understood that they both deserved closure and the chance to move forward. With a determined heart, he reached out to Emily, requesting to meet in person.
They decided to meet at a nearby park in Aptos. The air was thick with anticipation as Alex approached Emily, who wore a mix of uncertainty and hope in her eyes.
“Emily,” he began, his voice steady. “I want to thank you for meeting with me. I want to be honest with you about how I feel.”
Emily nodded, her gaze never leaving his. “I appreciate that, Alex. I know that things have changed since we last saw each other.”
Alex took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. “Yes, they have. I’ve spent some time reflecting on our past and what we once had. But I’ve also come to realize that my heart is leading me in a different direction.”
He spoke with sincerity, looking into Emily’s eyes with empathy and kindness. He wanted her to know that the decision he was making was not meant to hurt her but to be true to himself.
“Izzy has become a significant part of my life,” he continued. “She’s brought a sense of joy, adventure, and understanding that I can’t ignore. And I want to see where this connection leads.”
Emily nodded, a mixture of emotions passing over her face. “I understand,” she said softly. “I can see that you two have something special.”
Alex reached out to hold her hand gently. “Emily, you will always hold a place in my heart. But I believe that it’s time for both of us to move forward. We deserve to find happiness, and I hope you can find it too.”
Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes, but she managed a small smile. “Thank you for being honest with me, Alex. I wish you all the best.”
With that, they shared a bittersweet embrace, a symbol of closure and gratitude for the memories they had once shared. As Alex walked away, he felt a sense of peace within himself. He knew that this decision was the right one and that he was ready to embrace the future with Izzy.
As he approached “The Sea Glass Cafรฉ & Conservation Center,” Alex’s heart filled with anticipation. He couldn’t wait to see Izzy and share his decision with her. He knew that he needed to be open and vulnerable, just as she had been with him.
As he entered the cafรฉ, Izzy looked up and smiled, her eyes sparkling with warmth. “Alex, welcome back,” she said. “How was your meeting with Emily?”
Alex took a deep breath and took her hands in his, looking into her eyes with unwavering honesty. “Izzy, I spoke with Emily, and we both agreed that it’s time to close the door on the past,” he said. “I want to be with you. You’ve brought so much joy and love into my life, and I can’t imagine my future without you.”
Tears of happiness welled up in Izzy’s eyes as she smiled. “Alex, I feel the same way,” she said softly. “I’ve fallen in love with you, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us.”
In that moment, they sealed their bonds with a passionate kiss, knowing that they were ready to embark on a new chapter together–a chapter filled with love, trust, and the knowledge that they had found in each other what they had been searching for all along.
As the sea outside embraced the shore, Alex and Izzy embraced their love for one another, ready to face whatever life’s tides brought their way. They had learned that sometimes, the most meaningful decisions were about embracing the present, letting go of the past, and opening their hearts to the possibilities of the future–together.
Chapter 9 is the last chapter. Write it in the style of Colleen Hoover.
Chapter 9: Love in the Echoes
The coastal breeze swept gently through the air, carrying with it the whispers of love that lingered in the atmosphere. Alex and Izzy stood hand in hand, their hearts entwined, as they watched the sun set over the horizon, painting the sky with a kaleidoscope of colors. This moment, bathed in the warmth of the evening glow, held within it the echoes of their journey–an odyssey of love, growth, and unyielding hope.
As they stood on the sandy shores of Aptos, Izzy felt a sense of awe wash over her. She had come to this coastal town seeking adventure, but she had found so much more–an unexpected connection that had blossomed into a love that felt like coming home.
Alex turned to her, his eyes filled with tenderness, and spoke the words that made her heart flutter, “Izzy, from the moment we met, I knew there was something special about you. You’ve brought light into my life, and I can’t imagine a future without you.”
Tears of joy glistened in Izzy’s eyes as she replied, “Alex, you’ve shown me what it means to embrace the present, to trust in love, and to let go of the past. You make me believe in the magic of the sea and the beauty of the unexpected. With you, I feel like I can conquer any storm.”
Their hearts were in sync, beating to the rhythm of their love, and they knew that they had found their way to each other through the twists and turns of fate.
As the stars began to twinkle in the night sky, Alex took Izzy’s hand in his, and they started to walk along the moonlit beach. Their love story was far from perfect, but they had learned that love was not about perfection–it was about the journey they embarked on together, hand in hand, ready to face the world as a team.
The echoes of their laughter and shared moments reverberated through the night, creating a symphony of love that surrounded them. They danced in the moonlight, their souls intertwined, and as they shared promises for their future, they knew that their love story was just beginning.
In the echoes of Aptos, where the ocean met the shore, Alex and Izzy found their forever. They understood that life would continue to present challenges, but they were ready to face them together, just as they had faced every wave and tide.
Their love was like the ocean–ever-changing, powerful, and boundless. They knew that just as the sea embraced the shore, their love would withstand the test of time, becoming a love that ebbed and flowed, yet always remained.
As they walked back to their home in Aptos, hand in hand, they felt a sense of peace within their hearts. They had learned that love was not about the destination, but the journey–the shared moments, the laughter, the tears, and the unyielding support they offered each other.
And so, with the sea as their witness and the stars as their guide, Alex and Izzy embraced the future, ready to create a love story that would stand the test of time. For in each other’s arms, they had found the missing piece–the love that was worth the wait, the love that was destined to be.
In the echoes of their hearts, the tale of Alex and Izzy would forever live–a love story that would inspire the stars to shine a little brighter, the waves to dance a little merrier, and the world to believe in the power of love’s embrace.

Whispers on the shore, Love’s echoes in salty breeze, Hearts entwined, they soar.

Footprints in the sand, Tides of love forever bound, Echoes hand in hand.
Sea’s embrace, so deep, Love’s echoes ripple afar, Two hearts, soul to keep.

“Coastal Escapades”
That’s it – the end of my beach read excursion which also turned into a TV show and a New Yorker magazine piece as well.
This was great fun – with me selecting the story line and ChatGPT filling in the story. Perhaps not a story that’s going to win any awards – but this could certainly provide a basic framework around which a much better writer than I am might be able to embrace and extend the ideas that ChatGPT generated.
What’s also fun is that ChatGPT can generate alternative versions of any of these chapters – to stimulate even more ideas for a writer.

I’ve been observing the evolution of AI-based tools from a distance. I’m not very experienced with using these tools myself, but I thought I’d share some of my excursions into this fascinating domain of AI-assisted or generative AI tools.
One of the text-based AI tools is GPT-3 from OpenAI. Late last year, OpenAI opened up a playground where one can experiment with using GPT-3 to assist with text – helping create text, edit text, summarize text, and more. One of the illustration AI tools is called DALL-E and it’s also provided by OpenAI. I’ve been experimenting and learning with both of these tools.
Here’s an example of using GPT-3 to help write. This morning I happened to see a tweet where the author was talking about an article he’d pulled together about how writers should focus more on niches – it’s titled 7 Simple Ways to Niche Down. It’s a good article worth reading. As I was reading it, I began wondering how GPT-3 might help with writing an article on this subject – so I asked it:
write an article about how to niche down your writing
Here’s what I got back from GPT-3 just using the default settings:
If you’re a writer, chances are you wear many hats. You’re a wordsmith, a storyteller, and a communicator. But in order to be a successful writer, you need to be able to niche down your writing.
Niche writing is a specific type of writing that appeals to a specific audience. It’s about writing for a particular market or genre, and it requires you to know your audience inside and out.
The first step to niching down your writing is to identify your target audience. Who are you writing for? What are their needs and wants? What do they like to read?
Once you know your audience, you can start to focus your writing. What topics will appeal to them? What type of writing will they respond to?
If you’re not sure where to start, consider writing guest posts for blogs or magazines that your target audience reads. This is a great way to get your name and your work in front of them.
Another option is to create a blog or website of your own and focus on writing articles, tips, or tutorials that will help your target audience. This will not only help you attract readers, but it will also show them that you’re an expert in your field.
Finally, don’t forget to promote your work! Make sure your target audience knows about your writing by sharing it on social media, submitting it to directories or list-serves, or even just telling people about it in person.
Niche writing can be a great way to build a successful writing career. By targeting a specific audience, you can become known as an expert in your field and attract a loyal following of readers. So if you’re ready to niche down your writing, start by identifying your target audience and then focus your writing to appeal to them.
Not bad. I had a subject and was looking for help putting together an article on the subject. I did minimal work but left with the bones I might consider fleshing out if I actually wanted to write an article on that subject. I also asked GPT-3 to help me clean up the opening paragraph above – which it rewrote for me.
To add to this post, I wanted an illustration that captured a writing theme so I asked DALL-E to generate one for me – asking it to generate:
an Edward hopper painting showing a writer at work in front of an old typewriter
That’s the image you see above.
The power of this kind of AI-based technology is mind-blowing to a layman like me. And its capabilities seem to be accelerating rapidly. I’ve got so much more to learn – and I’ve having fun just beginning to wade in. If you’re doing any experimentation similar to this, let me know what you’re learning!
