Scott’s Kitchen: Scott’s Favorite Ultra-Quick Stir-Fry

I just updated Scott’s Kitchen with my favorite stir-fry recipe that I’ve been meaning to write down for a few months and finally got around to it.

This is one of those combinations of ingredients that you just cook from memory, simple and quick. We had this delicious stir fry for lunch today – such a superb combination of flavors and so easy to prepare!

Our Favorite Recipes Are Back!

Back about four years ago, I started posting some of my favorite recipes to my last generation blog. Unfortunately, those were “lost in translation” when we migrated to TypePad over two years ago and I’ve put off their “recovery” — until now.

The best of our recipes are now back online in Scott’s Kitchen – with more to come now that we’ve got the framework setup. Enjoy!

And, a sincere tip of our hat to the TypePad folks at SixApart for the massive upgrades they’ve been making to the hosting service!

Toast

A while back I wrote about my old favorite – but no longer available – San Francisco sourdough bread, Larraburu.

parisian_off.gifThis morning comes word that another long-time San Francisco sourdough, Parisian is toast — its current owner, Interstate Bakeries (now in bankruptcy), having shuttered both the Parisian bakery and the brand.

Parisian was never my favorite sourdough but I still enjoyed the bright red, white and blue displays of Parisian bread at the market and the airport! Sad to see it go.

Aloha

Today’s new header graphic gives it away — aloha from the western beaches of the Wailea district on the island of Maui.

Turns out it was time for a bit of rest and relaxation on the beach to clear the mind and refresh body and soul. Nothing quite like a few days of heavy lifting to ease the mind — such as deciding whether to spend the morning at the beach or the pool, putting on the suntan lotion, where to have lunch, have lunch, whether to spend the afternoon at the pool or the beach or touring, whether to work out or not, showering off the suntan lotion, where to have dinner, have dinner, read, check the emails, sleep, and do it all over again. Best part: ignoring the phone.

Best dinner *by far* this trip: Sansei in Kihei last night. First time there — they’ve got a madhouse out front waiting for the doors to open at 5:30. What did I know – other than a friend’s recommendation for the “best sushi on the planet”? Turns out Sansei offers early bird discounts for diners arriving between 5:30 and 6 PM — the level of discount varies based upon the day. Monday’s a 50% discount day, Tuesday’s are 25% discounts. And this is for seafood and sushi you’d be willing to pay a premium for just to go to the head of the line! If you go, be sure to say hi to Chad – he’s the best!

Another recommendation: I’ve been carrying an Apple Airport Express with me the last several trips — and there’s nothing better than being able to turn your tethered high-speed Internet access into tetherless wireless access letting you browse in bed, on the deck, wherever! Highly recommended — just don’t leave it behind (either at home or at the hotel!).

Some Great “Sour” Memories!

San Francisco - Friday, June 10, 2005For some reason tonight, the memory of the old San Francisco Larraburu sourdough french bread popped into my mind.

Back in the late 60’s-early 70’s, Larraburu was THE sourdough of preference — at least for me! Somewhere along the way, the bakery went out of business — and sourdough in San Francisco has simply never been the same.

Meanwhile, today’s Chronicle reports that Parisian’s bankrupt parent Interstate Bakeries is closing its San Francisco bakery. Parisian, while they “locked up” the “take me home” airport distribution for years, was, in my opinion, the worst of the San Francisco sourdoughs! Unlike Larraburu, Parisian tasted like it came from a corporate bakery!

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming…!

Kaygetsu

Highly recommended!

We had dinner Friday evening at Kaygetsu, a recently opened Japanese restaurant off Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park. The owners of Kaygetsu, Toshi and Keiko Sakuma, ran Toshi’s Sushiya on El Camino Real for nine years.

Tim Uy‘s posted a portion of a recent version of the Kaygetsu menu on his weblog. The Almanac has also posted a recent review: Beyond Sushi.

Tim’s menu posting doesn’t include the ala carte selections also available on the menu from which we ordered our meal — fried petrale sole (incredibly tasty!), grilled king crab legs (yum!), tempura moriawase (the rice cracker-coated prawns are superb!), sashimi (fresh!), etc. We ordered our ala carte entrees and ate family style — sharing all of the entrees. Kaygetsu also has a cozy six seat sushi bar that was nearly fully occupied during our early (5:30 PM) dinner!

Kaygetsu can be thought of as having three “tracks” at dinner — you can do sushi (at the bar or at your table), you can order ala carte (as we did), or you can order one of the two multi-course omakase menu’s. We had a superb dinner with our ala carte family style choices. Next time, who knows — we might upgrade or downgrade depending on our mood! There’s no doubt about it — we expect to be back many more times!

Did You Say “SuperSize”?

As if we all weren’t already big enough, Carl’s Jr seems quite proud of their new colossal-size hamburger.

The 1 lb. Double Six Dollar Burger features two 1/2-pound charbroiled, 100-percent Angus beef patties topped with three slices of American cheese, bread-and-butter pickles, red onions, lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise — all on a toasted, seeded bun. The result is a tasty mega-burger that requires two hands, a firm grip, a serious appetite — and many napkins.

Just can’t get enough?

The Fishtrap and The News

It was a nice day today for a Sunday drive over to Half Moon Bay to explore the harbor, walk on the beach, and pickup some great fish and chips at Barbara’s Fishtrap at Princeton-by-the-Sea.

Also noted that the best bookstore on that side of the hill — Moon News — moved out of its little strip mall location and onto Main Street a few months back.
