As I mentioned yesterday, we spent the weekend in Yosemite – mostly just to get away for a bit of R&R – but naturally a bit of photographer crept into the weekend equation!
My favorite shot from the weekend was another one of those serendipity shots. I had the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens on my Canon 5D Mark II while we were over exploring the area around Cook’s Meadow.
Somewhat amazingly, I noticed this family of three having fun in the snow right up against the edge of the meadow – aligned almost perfectly with Half Dome. Now you can see the shot! I struggled to compose it just right – at 70mm I could just barely capture the top of Half Dome with the edge of the meadow. This isn’t HDR – just a single shot RAW image. No tripod – just handheld.
I love serendipity – it’s what makes photography for me so darn much fun! I’m looking to further refine this image, brighten up the whites, and print it BIG on some glorious paper!
The rest of the black and whites from this Yosemite weekend are here. I think I’m finally all set with images for holiday cards for the next few years!
What a wonderful trip we had! As always, looking forward to heading back to Yosemite again soon!

Great photo, but that’s not El Cap meadow, it’s Cook’s Meadow. That also means that El Cap was “right” behind you, but about 2 miles behind you. What would have been behind you in this image is the Three Brothers.
Steve, no – definitely was not taken from Cook’s Meadow! We parked just beyond where the turnback to Yosemite Village is – on the brief section of two way road. The rest of the images in the Flickr set I linked to also came from the same spot.
Steve, apologies – you’re right. I went back and checked and this photo was definitely taken from Cook’s Meadow as you said! Apologies – will correct the post!
..except that it IS Cook’s Meadow. That’s the extremely over-photographed elm tree to the right of the people, and you can’t really see Half Dome from El Cap Meadow. The brief section of 2-way road is between Yosemite Village and Yosemite Lodge, near Yosemite Falls. El Cap meadow is on a one-way road.
I don’t mean to argue, but I live and work in Yosemite as a videographer, and have taken hundreds of images in Cook’s and El Cap Meadows.
It is still a lovely shot. 😉
Steve, yes – mea culpa! Somewhat amazingly, I even had Cook’s Meadow in the title of the photo on Flickr! Oh well, rough day today – wish I was back in Yosemite!
Sorry, I didn’t refresh before my second post and your correction. Feel free to delete it.
You still wouldn’t have El Cap behind you…
Yep, deleted!
