San Bernardino County Sun: Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier

The 79-year old guy with that voice that all the airline pilots try to emulate had some fun yesterday at the airshow at Edwards Air Force Base. Only at Edwards would they permit such antics!

Legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier for the last time Saturday at the annual air show at Edwards Air Force Base more than a half-century after he became the first person to accomplish the feat.

Yeager, 79, split the air with a sonic boom as he opened an air show that drew thousands of fans to the High Desert base.

Yeager took an F-15 Eagle to just over 30,000 feet on his last supersonic flight, capping a 60-year career that included assignments in San Bernardino and Victorville.

More about yesterday’s air show at Edwards.
