Greg Lucas and Christian Berthelsen report on what happened behind the scenes in the California legislature as the Financial Information Privacy Act, sponsored by Sen. Jackie Speier, D- Hillsborough, went down to defeat.
“I am embarrassed beyond words that the Democratic majority in the other house has seen fit not to give this bill a full and complete hearing,” Sen. Don Perata, D-Oakland, said in a floor speech.
Perata said that Speier’s measure had “been beaten more often than the Cal Bears football team” but that his constituents overwhelmingly supported the measure. He said people were more concerned about the fate of Speier’s bill than the state budget.
