Glenda Carroll reports that the Jeremiah O’Brien, the WW II Liberty ship based in San Francisco, will be steaming to Sacramento this weekend.
Not only is the O’Brien the only unaltered Liberty ship in the United States, but she is also the last active ship in the world that took part in the invasion of Northern France that began D-Day, June 6, 1944.
The Liberty ships, named for Patrick Henry’s famous comment, “Give me liberty or give me death,” were the workhorses of World War II. They carried supplies, food, fuel ammunition and weapons to the fighting troops.
