Mark Healy writes about the Taconic Parkway in New York state. Many years ago, I lived in Poughkeepsie and took the Taconic many times down to lower Westchester County.
The Taconic is best enjoyed by drivers who look at a winding slope, a gentle S-turn or merging traffic and see opportunity rather than peril. A typical highway requires little more of the driver than an occasional flick of the blinker and a tweak or two of the cruise control, the Taconic demands downshifting, accelerating through turns and agile switching of lanes to make room for merging traffic.
It is a special road — more than a country lane, but with much of that same feel. Brings back memories…
