The setting is Rodin’s Gates of Hell at the Cantor Arts Center on the Stanford University campus.
I love their description:
“The Rodin Sculpture Garden is open all hours, with lighting for nighttime viewing. Admission is free.”
I took three raw shots while seating on the ground, holding the camera as steady as I could, using Aperture Priority with three high-speed shots on the 5D Mark II.
After importing the images into Lightroom 2.2, I post-processed the three raw images using Photomatix Pro 3.1, saved the result into the same folder, and then synchronized the folder in Lightroom to pull the result back in. I then stacked the images in Lightroom – putting the Photomatix-processed result on the top of the stack.
The 5D Mark II is already famous for its low-light performance. One of these evenings, I’ll try to get over to Stanford to take a night-time version of this photo using the ambient light at the site.
Note: Here’s Wikipedia’s entry on Rodin’s Gates of Hell! “It stands at 6 m high, 4 m wide and 1 m deep (19.69’H × 13.12’W × 3.29’D) and contains 180 figures.”
