Paul Boutin reports on Vivato’s new smart antennas for directed coverage of Wi-Fi connections.
The key element is the antenna — more specifically, an electronically steered, planar-phased array of hundreds of antennas connected to a high-speed processor running Linux.
John Markoff also covers Vivato’s new technology in this morning’s New York Times. Marty Cooper, one of the original brains at Motorola behind cellular telephones, has a company with a similar technology for cell phones.
Glenn Fleishman comments on how this could be negative news for access point vendors — to the extent fewer access points may need to be deployed to cover a given area.
