San Jose Mercury News: Relief on Bay Area roads

Anyone who drives in the San Francisco Bay Area has noticed the dramatic improvement in traffic delays over that experienced two years ago in the heyday of the Internet boom.

Traffic delays fell nearly 40 percent in San Mateo County and 28 percent in Santa Clara County last year, as the dot-com recession rippled throughout the Peninsula and South Bay, according to a state report to be released Sunday.

Congestion eased 12 percent throughout the Bay Area, the biggest one-year decline since Caltrans began tracking traffic jams on state highways in 1981. It’s also the first time congestion levels have fallen since 1994.
