Ocean Light – A View from San Francisco’s Cliff House

Ocean Light - San Francisco - 2014

Here’s another view from San Francisco’s Cliff House – looking down Ocean Beach. Last Saturday we had the remnants of a rainstorm clearing out – making for interesting clouds, light and shadows.

I captured this image with my Fujifilm X-100T.

Solo - San Francisco - 2014

Here’s another view along San Francisco’s Ocean Beach shot from the viewpoints just south of the Cliff House. This is a beautiful spot on great mornings like this – being able to look right down the beach from this perspective.

This image was shot with my Fujifilm X100T with the TLC-X100 teleconversion lens installed. The TCL-X100 changes the focal length from 35 mm equivalent to 50 mm equivalent. It was helpful to have a bit more reach for this shot. The tonality is straight out of the camera – nothing else applied.

I love the surfer, how he’s positioned at the edge of the light with his footsteps fading beyond!

Ocean Beach - San Francisco - 2014

I love the light this time of year – and, for those of us who live in northern California, we also might even get some clouds in the skies! The combination of low angle light and great clouds – when we get them – is magical. This morning was one of those mornings – the skies were in “clearing winter storm” mode with lots of low clouds beginning to break up, swirl around, mixing with the sunlight in dancing patterns.

I headed up to San Francisco – originally thinking I was just going to visit the galleries at 49 Geary St. where a new Group F.64 exhibition has opened at the Scott Nichols Gallery and a new retrospective show – “The Plot Thickens” – has just been put up at the Fraenkel Gallery. My plan was to drive to Daly City BART and then BART in to the Montgomery Street station and walk to the galleries at 49 Geary.

But, as I was driving north up 280, the skies were just magnificent. I kept resisting the urge to find a place to pull over to shoot the clouds hanging along the skyline of the coastal ridge – and just let me eyes enjoy the magnificent play between cloud and light. As I got closer to Daly City, I could see that this cloud activity continued further north over the western beach of San Francisco and, perhaps, even up to the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate. I waved off my plan for Daly City BART and, instead, headed over Brotherhood Way to Sunset, then Sloat and up the Great Highway to the Cliff House.

That’s where this image was taken – shot handheld with my iPhone 6 and post-processed in Lightroom. What a beautiful morning!

San Francisco’s Ocean Beach at New Year’s

Ocean Beach - New Years Day - 2013

For the last few years, I’ve headed to San Francisco on New Year’s Day – mostly to the Golden Gate Bridge.

This year I did that as well – but had fun stopping along the way at Ocean Beach.

Here’s a shot taken with my Nikon D600 – converted to monochrome using Nik’s Silver Efex Pro.

I love the movement in this image – and the contrast that the monochrome treatment provides.

At the Beach – New Year’s Day at Ocean Beach, San Francisco

Ocean Beach - San Francisco - 2013 by Scott Loftesness

For the past few years, I’ve been heading to San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge for some photography. I’m not much of a football fan – and after the holidays it feels great to get out and walk with camera in hand!

This past New Year’s Day, I went up the Great Highway and stopped at the Cliff House. The morning light was very nice and I captured this shot looking down the beach just down the hill a bit from the Cliff House. I processed it to black and white using Nik’s Silver Efex Pro 2.

Here’s another view of Ocean Beach from my New Year’s Day explorations. When I processed this image, I thought it sort of looked like some of the images I’ve seen from Burning Man – thus the title Burning Edge. This image was processed only in Lightroom 4.3 using Trey Ratcliff’s Lightroom Presets.

New Year’s Day 2013 – Dreamy at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach

Dreamy at Ocean Beach

For the last few years, I’ve had a tradition of heading out on January 1st for some San Francisco photography – always of the Golden Gate Bridge – but usually some other spots as well.

Today was bright and sunny – although not especially clear. My first stop was on the hill up by the Cliff House above Ocean Beach. This is such a simple shot – shooting straight down the beach – and it captures the late morning mood on the beach perfectly.

Shot with my Nikon D600, I post-processed the image in Lightroom 4.3 using Trey Ratcliff’s Lightroom Presets which added the dreamy effect and tones. This particular preset is named “Under the Stars” and is in package 3.

After Ocean Beach, I headed into the Presidio and on to Baker Beach where I caught this view of the Golden Gate – I titled it “Smooth”.

Alone on Ocean Beach

Alone - Ocean Beach - 2012

A couple of weeks ago, I headed to San Francisco on a rainy day – with my new Nikon D600 in hand. After a great time at Crissy Field, I started to head home – along San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. The waves were up – and I pulled over as I headed south on the Great Highway.

This image captures a solitary walker out on the beach, alone. The salt air in your hair!
